Recommend doing some research before anyone goes in on this. This is the NON "Extreme" version. It's basically a downgraded chipset from the Z1 Extreme which is usually $599 new or ~$500ish open box. The general consensus is that there is a measurable difference in performance and that the Z1 Extreme is very much worth the cost to upgrade. Steam Deck generally reviews out better than this non Extreme version with the OLED version out performing it and even the LCD version is on par. For some folks with specific use cases where you want a Windows handheld and aren't planning to play many AAA titles, this might work, but I think that use case is fairly narrow. Then again there's quite a few people who have purchased this and are more than happy and don't miss the extra performance. Just be aware of your use case is all I'm saying.

Also beware the SD card issue. If you are buying an Ally it's best to just assume the SD card reader is dead or will be dead at some point. It's safer to just put the money you'd spend on an SD Card toward an new larger internal SSD.
Agreed on the research. Though the reviews recommending the Z1E vs the standard Z1 model was based on a $600 vs $700 price. At those prices, it was a no brainer to spend the extra $100 for the Extreme.

For sale prices though, the standard Z1 model becomes much more appealing at $400, and especially at $300 for open box. I picked up a standard Z1 open box model at Best Buy for $300, and it ended up being in like new condition. At that price, I am very happy. Even new games run pretty well at 720p, and anything from a year or two ago is able to run with decent to excellent performance.

The games still look great at 720p at this size screen, so as long as you don't mind the lower resolution for newer games, it runs quite well. The standard model doesn't get very hot either and stays very quiet, so I can't complain for the price I paid. At $400 the price is still decent, though I wouldn't have paid that much for mine originally.

Take the z1 extreme version if you can. Worth the little extra. This is just standard. I've had mine since launch with no issues like SD card or anything. Just make sure you do proper updates like a PC. Works great with my XR glasses too

Get the z1 extreme if you can. There's a big difference. I've had the Ally since launch with no issues. Just make sure you update everything like a regular PC. I combine this with my XR glasses and it's awesome.

Same price on Asus's online store as well.
Should be the normal price

Nintendo's been around a long time. They fill a niche market and don't see their consoles at a loss during initial release. Don't want their product, don't buy it. If it weren't for Nintendo gaming today might be a lot different. First they brought the gaming market back from the Abyss with the Famicon / NES and they served as a major motivating factor when they spurned Sony when they were looking to collaborate on the Super NES CD-ROM.
Nintendo is arguably the best developer in the biz but also puts out some of the worst hardware ever (i.e. Virtual Boy, WiiU, etc. etc.). The Switch, on the other hand, was great in 2017 but the hardware is disgustingly underpowered for 2024 so much so, it even limits Nintendo's own new software at this point (i.e. TOTK).

For people ragging on the specs vs the extreme, I'd point out streaming. I recently started using Moonlight/Sunshine on my Steam Deck and streaming is awesome. This was what I was debating buying the Z1 for. If you're just going to use it to stream 1080p/120hz from your PC, there's no real benefit to buying the Extreme. They both will do it perfectly and have low battery usage.

What I needed is the steam deck's efficiency, with the screen and controllers of the Go, and the body color and touch response of the Ally...

I ended up just getting the chunky Go. Best Buy also has some great open box deals for it.
Not sure why you are downvoted this is literally the most fair take… non of the handhelds get everything right. They all have redeeming qualities just non of them fit every need unfortunately
