That unfixable issue also effects the M3 chips as well……

If you peel back the onion a bit and click on the link you provided, you'll get this: https://www.techradar.com/pro/sec...ption-keys

"Fortunately, it seems the attack is pretty difficult to pull off"

To note, TechRadar is awful at explaining how the 99.9% of the world is unaffected. I'm nowhere near an expert in this area but....this is so far removed from normal life that you'd almost need to be a willing participant and have already given up control of your device. It's not like someone can just sit next to you and siphon it out like in the movies.

The article you provided literally describes a fix.
If you read the article, it literally says the fix doesn't work on the M1 and M2:
"The good news is that generally, this vulnerability can be easily addressed by disabling the speculative feature.

True, it will result in poorer performance, but in the case of GoFetch, that decrease in performance would only be limited to cryptographic functions, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. The bad news is that this problem cannot be solved on the M1 and M2.

"We observe that the DIT bit set on M3 CPUs effectively disables the DMP. This is not the case for the M1 and M2," the researchers explained."

However, it's very difficult to exploit and requires the perpetrators have your computer.

I have a hard time with 8gb/256gb without the ability to upgrade. I know it is what it is, but still.

Yep, probably a great use case. On here are also a ton of M1/M2 deals; choose how you wanna. Your son will know when it's time to sell the Air and move towards the Pro, and that's usually when they're....a professional (or one trying to moonlight as such)

Have fun and enjoy how happy your kid is going to be.

Final note: every time I go to the apple store there is a parent who is exercising AppleCare because X happened. Could be a great way to protect your neck.
Thank you. Should have noted we have a 2018 Air with Intel and it strains badly when he's working.

I've heard the M3 made a big diff over M2 but if the programs I mentioned can be easily handled by an M1 Air with 8GB ram, that'd be great

I absolutely hate these asinine posts about hypothetical vulnerabilities on consumer laptops. In order to exploit this, the hacker would need to have physical access to your laptop, and know your admin password. If you gave those up, you are toast already, with or without this 'vulnerability'. Get some perspective people!

Non mac user question. Is 8GB enough? It's not on my Windows laptop.

It depends on what you are doing…for most common tasks yes (like browsing the internet). If you want to go beyond that it can become more of an issue.

Apple insists 8GB unified memory equals 16GB regular RAM - https://appleinsider.com/articles...egular-ram

I own a M! Macbook Air with 8gb of ram. As long as your just using it casually you wont notice any slow down. Web browsing, watching Netflix, playing MacOS games, etc.. I think Apple uses some of the newest and fastest 8gb ram sticks in their products and MacOS itself is very efficient.

If your a professional photographer, videographer, music producer, app developer, artist or any other creative professional I would then consider looking at other Apple Mac products like the Macbook Pro line, which include a fan and are better spec'd devices to endure the workloads that professionals would need to use them for.

If your a casual user Apple notes that 8gb of ram is equivalent to 16gb of ram on an Intel device.
I asked Google....Is this true?
"Yes, Apple claims that 8GB of unified memory is equal to 16GB of regular RAM. Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) is a design change that hard-wires memory into the processor in Apple Silicon, which removes traditional bottlenecks and allows memory to be accessed faster. Apple has been criticized for providing too little RAM in its iMac and MacBooks. To address this, Apple has: Doubled down on how Apple Silicon uses memory more efficiently, Used memory compression, and Implemented a unified memory architecture."

"Apple says that the 8GB model should be enough for everyday tasks like: Browsing the web, Writing documents, and Doing some light video editing.
Unified memory integrates RAM and vRAM into one memory location for CPU and GPU components to store and access data. It vastly improves processing speeds because it:
Eliminates file copying
Eliminates the need for separate VRAM
Provides the GPU with the same amount of RAM as the CPU
Reduces the need for extra RAM simply to support duplicate files
However, you can fit less into 8GB of memory than 16GB."

TLDR; Casual user - 8GB of RAM, Professional user - 16gb+ of RAM.

At 42% more expensive than the M1 version at Walmart (https://slickdeals.net/f/17361039-apple-macbook-air-13-3-retina-m1-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-699-free-shipping), this seems like a bad deal unless you need something added in the M2 or M3 MacBook Air (or really just want the latest and greatest).

There is a deal for $950 or so for the 15" M2. that's a pretty good deal if you want a 15" but it's an M2 chip . It's from CDW and posted on slickdeals.

I prefer M3 for slightly higher single core clock speed and dual monitor support

Also, this deal is same as Apple EDU discount (just fyi, I'd wait for the $150 gift card back to school deal).
No, Apple does not check/verify if you are indeed EDU Qualified.
Thanks, TIL about the edu stuff. Worth it to wait for the GC in this case, does anyone know if they do the back to school deal every year?
