That unfixable issue also effects the M3 chips as well……

If you peel back the onion a bit and click on the link you provided, you'll get this: https://www.techradar.com/pro/sec...ption-keys

"Fortunately, it seems the attack is pretty difficult to pull off"

To note, TechRadar is awful at explaining how the 99.9% of the world is unaffected. I'm nowhere near an expert in this area but....this is so far removed from normal life that you'd almost need to be a willing participant and have already given up control of your device. It's not like someone can just sit next to you and siphon it out like in the movies.

Another advantage of the M3 over the M2, is that Apple went back to 2x 128GB drives (faster) than the single 256GB drive the M2 had. Read/write speeds are improved with the M3.

Come on Apple, 16gb is like $10 more than 8gb of memory. On a $1,000 laptop that is inexcusable and pure greed. And 8gb for a laptop in 2024? My phone has had 8gb memory for 4+ years and was $240.

My son has started doing basic coding on Scratch and tried his hand at Roblox game building. Anyone know if this would hold up well for that sort of thing?
Scratch is such a great thing to encourage. It put my son on a great trajectory learning all kinds of programming languages! Even a Chromebook works for scratch

Thanks, TIL about the edu stuff. Worth it to wait for the GC in this case, does anyone know if they do the back to school deal every year?
It happens every year but I don't remember when.

Last time it was like $100 off on EDU site but then they gave $150 gift card so it was like $250 off.

Come on, do some more research and complain about Microsoft and don't forget Microsoft is $300 per 8GB upgrade!!! Apple is $200.

You're also only getting 128GB SSD with Surface 9. OMG the humanity, please go picket at Microsoft HQ also.

There is a deal for $950 or so for the 15" M2. that's a pretty good deal if you want a 15" but it's an M2 chip . It's from CDW and posted on slickdeals.

I prefer M3 for slightly higher single core clock speed and dual monitor support

Also, this deal is same as Apple EDU discount (just fyi, I'd wait for the $150 gift card back to school deal).
No, Apple does not check/verify if you are indeed EDU Qualified.
They just don't care about that extra $100 when they charge $200 for an additional 8GB RAM to make a device viable for modern multitasking. 😄

Surface is a full tablet that doubles as a laptop. Dumb comparison.

It's also slow intel chip and drains battery and can't last all day

and still $300 for 8GB RAM upgrade to 16GB which voids the dumb comments about Apple 8GB to16GB at $200

Every surface I see has keyboard attached and used as laptop mode because Win11 tablet mode sucks.

I absolutely hate these asinine posts about hypothetical vulnerabilities on consumer laptops. In order to exploit this, the hacker would need to have physical access to your laptop, and know your admin password. If you gave those up, you are toast already, with or without this 'vulnerability'. Get some perspective people!
That is not even remotely true, the hackers can exploit it remotely by using a software. Do some research before spreading false information.

And, how exactly are they getting into your machine to run this 'remote software' in the first place, without you giving them access? If you are downloading crapware from shady sites and running them under an admin/root account, you have far greater issues than this vulnerability!

Non mac user question. Is 8GB enough? It's not on my Windows laptop.
A generic answer to this would be - if the use involves keeping large files open (lots of tabs w/images/videos OR just large files), the system may try to optimize but it can only do so much. Otherwise, you'll be fine.
