This is a very good unit. I've used it for years and tempted to get another one now on sale as a backup. I purchased in 2020 for $170. Put in one of those extra T-Mobile lines they used to give away, and it's a solid portable router.

Does it count towards your mobile hotspot allotment or is it unlimited on T-Mo if you use a voice line with unlimited data?
There are more complicated ways to accomplish this, but if you're on the newer version of the router firmware there is actually an input field called TTL in the settings of the 4G modem where you can enter a new value https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/chang.../83?page=5.
For T-Mobile based SIM cards in the US (Metro included) that value is normally 65, but you may have to research and experiment with it. I use one of these when I go camping in my RV with a prepaid Metro sim card and it works great, decent 4G speeds and unlimited data
grabbed one after mulling it over for the last few days. I can use this on my telescope rig that uses a portable small PC (Melee Quieter 4c). Was thinking I could mod the Quieter 4 to have external antennas but the router just makes it all convenient to use in a hotel/traveling too while having its own internal battery too.

Could you share the TTL and MTU settings you use? I see TTL=65 and the forum post you shared seems to suggest that but I noticed one suggesting to use Network Analyzer, which I have, and I see my phone's TTL is 53? Is that normal?

It really depends on wireless carrier. It's a bit of a cat and mouse game and the TTL settings that Verizon vs. T-Mobile vs. other carriers expect to detect that you're using a device as a hotspot are going to differ. I've gotten Verizon and AT&T to work, but been most successful with T-Mobile.
What I do is buy a Metro by T-Mobile sim card, throw it in an old Android phone I don't use anymore to activate it and ensure its working, then I throw that SIM card in my GL-iNet router. I then go into the 4G modem settings and do three things:
I change the IMEI number that the gl-inet router reports to match the Android phone I activated with. There's an option in the UI to send "AT" commands to the modem and the command to change IMEI is AT+EGMR=1,7,"YOURIMEINUMBERHERE"
I set the TTL to 65 in the UI. This can be done in settings or through a firewall rule, see that post on the gl-inet forums about it
I connect my laptop to the router and watch a YouTube video and then log into the Metro website to check my usage and make sure I haven't used any hotspot data
I got all this information from watching this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alMsu_tfZPE and from reading the gl-inet forums. Once you have it setup once you don't really need to mess with it, but if you use pre-paid wireless cards you will need to keep buying another month unless you just use a T-Mobile card with monthly plan.
