I don't think most people have problems playing one song. Sonos subs are filled with these comments and turns out to be network related. It's not only about the router there can also be interference in your building or other reasons.
Trust me if people could not play one song on these speakers they wouldn't sell and everyone would bash them

Arc retails for $899.00 and Sub for $799.00, so technically it is $1698.00 + tax, unless you can find it on a deep discount.
Not sure if you've actually heard two HomePods versus an Arc by itself, in the same exact scenario, but I have, and the HomePods definitely sound better (to me).
Arc + Sub definitely overtakes the HomePods, but at 2-4x the cost.
Literally this week:
Sonos Arc SL Shadow Soundbar (Refurbished) & More $509 (slickdeals.net)

Yeah, if you really want homepods for music/siri purposes and then have them double as TV speakers then it's fine. But if you want high quality TV audio first and foremost, get an arc. I don't even have the sub (I did then returned it) and think it's great.
I also have a dedicated theater in the basement with two huge ported SVS subs, so if I really want bass….
I had picked 2 of them up recently via Costco online for $250. Surprised there was a second price drop so quickly but guess they sold out super fast.
