On TP-Link website it says they have no plans to discontinue in US, but who knows..

How does Tapo compare to Kasa, in your experience? Any decrease in quality in the newer bulb?

Tapo is a newer brand by TP-Link, but it is their budget brand (as in less features, not necessarily lower build quality). Kasa is not going anywhere.

I've been disappointed in my Kasa bulbs. I have an 800 lumen and a 1000 lumen bulb, and the 800 isn't very bright. I went with Kasa because I have their energy monitoring smart plugs all over the house (they're compatible with Sense energy monitoring).

Anyway, I was expecting more features: it would be fun for my kids to have an event trigger that puts them into 'party mode', where they cycle through colors or something, but all they do is change color to a static color, and I don't have much use for differently colored lights.

These lights also don't remember what state they were in if the power goes out, so when it comes back on they will always default to on. I don't think there was a configuration setting to change this behavior.

For $20 I expected more on the CRI rating, 80 is not good.

These are ok. The lack of HomeKit support is unfortunately, and I've found they flicker at certain brightnesses. At just over $5/bulb they're worth it to use as dumb bulbs that you configure once for temperature and brightness, then never touch again, so long as your desired brightness doesn't flicker

I've had these on my front covered porch for well over a year. They are not exposed to direct rain, but we have a ton of humidity (2 miles from ocean, coastal NC). Still going strong.

I have a few of these. No problems generally, but I wouldn't use them in a completely enclosed fixture. The white base part of the bulb gets very hot. Like surprisingly hot at 100% brightness. I see measurements in the 140f ranges.
I've found lowering their brightness level from 100% to 85-90% reduces the heat enough that I think it's probably ok. With that said, I'd avoid using those In something fully enclosed as I wouldn't be surprised if it degrades itself faster than normal, due to excessive heat levels.
Yes, I can absolutely confirm that these things are hot garbage in an enclosed fixture, I have had 3 bulbs start flickering after they overheat. They put this info NOWHERE on the Amazon page, but it is in the fine print in the manual that comes with the bulbs. These are NOT rated for enclosed fixtures. Also, TP-Link's return process was a pain in the ass. So, do not buy these things unless you're going to use them in some sort of open fixture where they can breathe.

I got some nice Philips Ultra HD bulbs for my enclosed fixtures, and they run much cooler. I'm very happy with them.

That's BS. Half of the Tapo and Kasa devices are identical, and the prices are basically the same. For several years, Kasa products were available in the US and Tapo was in Europe. But now we get Tapo stuff in the US as well, confusingly.

Also, Tapo is now the unified app for controlling both Tapo and Kasa devices. You can import your Kasa devices into the Tapo app, but you not the reverse. Seems to me like Tapo is the brand that's more likely to stick around: https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/...-app-merge

I have 3 of them running outside inside of weatherproof glass fixtures. Every now and then have to recover them.

Mine are outside in weatherproof glass fixtures. Zero problems going on 5 years.

I noticed my kasa bulbs revert to "on" after a power outage or someone turning off the switch. I'm thinking this is deliberate so you aren't left in the dark after a power outage. Also, you know your bulb works right away whenever you screw it into a powered fixture or turn the power on. Probably saves people a lot of embarrassment when otherwise the company might get thousands of calls from frustrated customers who end up learning their "default off" bulbs are fine, but after the power glitches or their 5 y.o. turned off the switch, they just had to go in the app and turn it on, or wait for their modem and router to reboot from the outage...

Great deal! Love mine. I'd get more, but have all I need. Thanks, OP and repped anyway!
