If your garage drops below 32, the freezer won't cycle with non garage ready models, making everything thaw in the freezer. The cheaper fridges only measure the temperature of the fridge. When it warms up it cycles the compressor, blows cold air into the freezer which exhausts into the fridge until it reaches the desired temp. if it is 32 degrees outside the fridge never heats up, so the cycle never happens and therefore the freezer normalizes to the 32 also. By applying a few watts of heat it ensures the cycle happens to cool that isolated heat source.
You can buy retro fit heating pads to resolve this in older models for ~$12 off Amazon. But nice to have the feature built in.
