I always said best selling point for a AVR/ processor is channel count. It takes leaps and bounds more watts to make an actual difference. And basically every single DAC with modern tech is far better than our hearing will ever be. Paper and reality are different things.

From personal experience I kinda agree.
If you need 15 channels why look at a receiver with less channels, it's a moot point.

People love "paper" but I agree doesn't really tell you much about reality!

As you pointed out most of that "paper" isn't even audible anyways!

You just have to look at all these popular AVRs that don't do well on paper yet people rave how great they are in reality as proof!

Yep, room calibration/ treatment is the biggest difference. I got into manual DSP and man if I had discovered this earlier I would have done far less purchasing. What are you rocking? My main setup is a x6700 in a 9.2.4

I would add the quality of your speakers and their placements to that also.
Far too often people believe only the LCRs are the only ones to worry about!

Yes I chuckle when people say Dirac is head and shoulders better/destroys Audyssey!
Clearly they don't know how to use Audyssey especially if you calculate MultiEQ-X into that equation!

They are very comparable, I'll give Dirac the edge mainly because of their DLBC RC.

After many auditions I went with the 3800. Using as a pre pro on a 5.2.4 added both Dirac RCs.
It easily competes with any 9/11 channel AVR.

Recently got a chance to audition the Cinema 50 again, this time with Dirac(both).
Marantz + Dirac made a pretty good mix, I was very impressed!

I came from a Denon, then Yamaha Aventage, and now have an Arcam AVR31. I can say sonically the Arcam is superior to all, but yes it is also the buggiest and most user-unfriendly and lots of little quirks. It does have a 5 year warranty though and again, it sounds incredible (Driving JBL HDI 3800s). It also plays those speakers incredibly loud (and clean). That being sai, I'm sure this Denon is no slouch

Are you just using in a 2 channel or all 7 or ?

Why the 31 and not one of the other less expensive models?

What did you pay for it, out of curiosity?
Did you add DLBC?

Currently using it in 5.1, but listen to a lot of 2.1 for music. Wanted the Class G amps and got a smoking deal on it (yes its overkill for amount of channels it can support, but the only model with class G amps). Just running DIRAC without DLBC (only one sub - a PSA TV1813).
Paid less than half typical selling price through a friend and obviously its worth way more than that. Its got a ton of quirks. At the price I paid I can live with them. Had I paid full retail (which was close to $7k when it first came out) Id probably have returned it due to the quirks. Most though that have this AVR31 are happy with it and can accept the quirks.
Having said that, unless I got a similar deal on another Arcam, Id probably go back to Denon if it had the features I needed.
