How to dump the phone and keep the plan:
  • Purchase a BYOD Tracfone SIM card, available for $1 almost anywhere. One vendor is Best Buy [bestbuy.com], but there are many others.
  • Write down the SIM number.
    • Make sure it is a BYOD sim, not a sim with pre-loaded minutes. Only a BYOD sim will work.
  • Purchase BLU phone.
  • Activate BLU phone using the instructions provided with the phone.
    • You may wait up to a year to activate the phone.
    • Your 1-year plan begins when you initially activate.
    • You must initially activate using the provided BLU phone.
  • Insert Tracfone sim in BYOD phone.
    • BYOD phone must be capable of communication on the Verizon network, and must be either unlocked or locked to Tracfone.
  • Contact Tracfone to move number and service to new phone. You may do this multiple ways:
    • Online, at https://www.tracfone.com/activation/selectdevice while logged in with your Tracfone account.
    • Text to TRANSFER to 611611
    • Contact Tracfone support via online chat or phone. Tracfone support isn't the greatest, but they can do this.
  • Dispose of BLU phone as you see fit.
    • One community member has reported that you can return it to QVC, get your money back, and keep the service. However, that is very YMMV - it very well may have been a mistake on QVC/Tracfone's part.
    • The BLU phone won't have much trade in value, but may be usable with some other deals that provide "bonus" trade in value (I.E. $100-more-than-it's-worth deals)
    • Best Buy [bestbuy.com] offers free tech recycling. Better than throwing it out where the lithium will be wasted and become an environmental hazard.

The phone should unlock automatically 60 days after activation. But, if you still have the phone 60 days after activation, you haven't been following instructions. I'm also not totally certain on that - I'm not sure if a deactivated phone automatically unlocks.

QVC has dropped any mention of the 24GB data being included, which makes it a roll of the dice. Users have reported both getting the data and not getting it as well.
I received the phone yesterday, just activated it, and got the 24GB.
So the QVC phone includes 24GB (2GB per month)

Unless you let a cellphone control every aspect of your life or you believe that you cannot breathe unless you have a cellphone in your hand, like so many people these days, this is a great deal. Less than 7 dollars a month for phone service is a great deal.

I got this deal over 2 months ago. Now TF says it's unlocked but the phone is still sim locked. After multiple calls yo TF and the retailer, they now say is BLU fault and I have to contact them. Also 1 month after I activated and swapped phones, my line got deactivated and this plan's balance got removed. Went through many calls with their tech support department and needed the BLU phone text verification to get the plan balance back. So if this happens to someone who dumped the phone, this might be a problem. Did TF get worse? They won't let me merge balances now. Just wanted to give my recent experience on this specific phone+plan purchase.

Thanks for commenting. Maybe someone who uses this deal to top off their existing Tracfone service can comment about how they do it.
We have been using Tracfone for about 15 years. We travel and have had no problem getting service. All 50 states . I buy these deals all the time for the plan minutes, text, data and a year's service. I recently bought the one mentioned here and activated it on the Blu phone and then moved the sim to my Motorola phone. I found another deal on HSN for $42 that I purchased for my wife's phone primarily for the year of service. You can activate these plans and the data, text, minutes and service time just adds to your current plan. So for less than $150 my wife and I have a year of cell service. The activation process is easier if you have an account with Tracfone and learn to do the transfer yourself. The plans are great but the phones are junk. Walmart has a machine near their store entrance where you can recycle them and make a few bucks. I got $10 for the 2 I recently activated.

If you swapped sim after 1 month of course the phone was deactivated & plan removed - you don't swap sims.
If you want to move plan to another phone the right way you have to activate the new phone with it's own sim & choose "keep my number" when activating (that also deactivates first phone). This isn't specific to a phone it's TF/TbyV/ST brands policy.
Swapping SIMs can lead to unfortunate issues that are a real headache to get resolved which is why it's best to wait the 60 days for unlocking first - then activate/move plan to a different phone.

Sorry if I was unclear, I activated the blu phone + plan then swapped my main phone via customer support. Not me just physically swapping sim because the imei has to match with the sim. Then after a month, my main phone with the 24gb plan was deactivated and the plan balance was removed and I only has the balance that i had before activating the Blu plan. The blu phone was inactive with no service because I only wanted the plan balance for my usage.my plan was then to use the blu phone after unlocked with my freeup att sim as a backup.it was a headache for then to investigate and adding the blu plan back to my line. Currently, the TF system says blu phone is unlocked already but when I put different sim it says sim locked. So now TF and the online retailer telling me to contact blu manufacturer. I haven't done that yet.

That makes more sense & it sounds like the rep did something wrong when activating/moving your line to the 2nd phone since your year of service wasn't moved as it should have been. It also seems to have affected the unlock process since it didn't unlock.
Customer reps don't always know what they're doing & I finally had to file an FCC complaint to get a phone unlocked after dealing with unhelpful support. It got done but took time & several calls.

Will Tracfone, as we know it, continue to exist after that date or another date certain? If it will end relatively soon, will our data, minutes and texts then simply be void? This had been an online topic of discussion for some time now, but I haven't followed it closely.

That's for the grandfathered AT&T (and possibly T-Mo) service, not their Verizon service. With Verizon now owning the TF brands they want all users on Verizon.
Just like a lot of stuff on the internet it's more misinformation - I wouldn't be concerned until they stop selling phones bundled with 1 yr plans.

I've been with them for a few years and last yr. bought the 2 pack flip phone deal for $40. Each had a yr. of service and I think 1300 texts, min. and 1.3 gig of data. I took a screen shot of my then current balances on the web site for my account just in case. I then used their automated system to activate one of the new phones, selected "keep my number" thus merging my account holdings with the data, texts and min. on the new phone. It all went well. I waited until the next day to reactivate my old TF and transfer everything back to that better phone, thus deactivating the new flip phone. I repeated the process for the second flip phone a few days later. Very easy. I never exchanged SIMs from any of the phones. A friend tried to accomplish the same thing by calling CS. They told her to exchange SIMs. I had warned her about that but she did what the told her to do and there followed several hours of predictable problems. When they finally got it resolved, they had talked her into buying more data and her account had fewer min., texts and a little less data than it should have.

A phone is a garbage but the plan seems ok. In addition, automatically unlock after 60 days may not work but one needs to call their unlock dept get an unlock code. Be ready to be frustrated back and forth.
