Ummm. Don't most cell phones have a hotspot feature? What is the need/use for this?
It all depends...
1. It could depend on your plan and what hotspot limit it allows, for example. Many plans may only allow limit hotspot. A separate hotspot plan may be better.
2. Sometimes it's a question of reception. If the cell signal is best at the window, say in a hotel situation with shitty or no wifi, then who donates their cell phone to be parked in the window so the rest of the family can surf. And the owner of the cell cannot use their cell unless they keep standing next to the window
3. If you want backup for home internet (DSL/Cable/Fiber), then you connect connect a cell phone via USB or get one of these devices
4. Cell modems (for example inside iPhones) can have lots of frequencies (bands) but don't have external antennas, and even the internal ones may not be the best. Not sure the iPhones support carrier aggregation, for example. A good mobile router with a recent modem (Cat 19/ Cat 20) can make a huge difference in data speeds.
5. running your phone in hotspot mode also consumes the batterie quickly. A separate hotspot device with extra battery could help (or just have an extra power bank)
6. For certain situations, such as camping, and specially RV's, a device like this with an external antenna (ideally maybe even mounted on the roof of the RV) will likely be much better than 4 people sucking data on their plans (depends on the plans of course)
7. In some areas, you may not have DSL/Cable/Fiber. If you want 4G/5G LTE Internet to feed into your LAN, you would need something like this (or Inseego MiFI, Gli Spitz, etc.)

It really depends. ;-)

Nope dont need a phone line, its just a tablet line. You will need to get it as a business, so either you have a business tax id or you can use your own ssn as a sole proprietor or something. I picked up an unlocked Inseego M2000, works fine.
That $15 business tablet works in the MiFi? No limits? Great speeds? I thought MiFi and Tablet are different?

Did you need to have a TMO mobile phone plan to get the tablet plan? And which 5G hotspot do you use?
If you have or plan on using TMO I recommend to get the Inseego MiFi X Pro (3000B = T-Mobile). You can occasionally find them on the bay for ~$100 ish in like new (locked). They can be unlocked after 40 days on the TMO network. They have 5G and all LTE bands under the sun and will work almost anywhere in the world once unlocked and are 4G/5G. https://static.inseego.com/us/dow...mobile.pdf
The "uncarrier who became a carrier again" makes a bit of a fuss if you ask for the unlocking if it isn't financed through them, so def wait until after 40+ days on the network before you bug them about unlocking the device.

Unfortunately not. There is no option in it at all. I saw a post on some forum about someone building a custom firmware with some adjusted IMEI but haven't explored further. That's why I asked the other member here if the business tablet plan works great in these devices.

If you want to modify IMEI and TTL, explore the Spitz AX https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-x3000/ or Puli https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-xe3000/. They do support that, but another price class and whole different level of router. I think the Puli is essentially the same but has the internal battery for mobile use.
Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHZ6Czu3z7c

Great reception due to external antenna.

Yep it works fine without needing to mod anything.

Can these things work on cruises?
I don't want to assume too much, but the open-endedness of this question makes me think you may possibly be thinking about more general connectivity/security/streaming etc. issues while traveling; at least, that was me at this point last year. Did some digging and figured out eventually that a $35 gl.inet travel router and VPN met all my travel needs, and in a pinch can sub for my home internet using my Visible unlimited plan. Just my experience, but it was research time well spent.

Most phones have the capability but that is typically controlled by your carrier locked phone (so they can charge for the service.) From a phone perspective, I use Easy Tether Pro which gets around that.

Listing says:

And then just half-page scroll down:
> DEVICE IS LOCKED TO AT&T NETWORK AND ONLY WORKS ON AT&T AND ITS MVNO LIKE CRICKET, H2O, GENMOBILE, AIRVOICE.

Go figure 🤦 ♂️

I'm still using my $20 tablet plan SIM in an old nighthawk specifically because that's one of the few hotspots you can hack to spoof the IMEI of an iPad

I guess they do, but I assume that not all plans allow for use without paying more.

It's another reason I refuse to own a phone I can't root. It's my phone and my data, I refuse to let the carrier tell me I can't use the hotspot feature.

Checkout TetherFi - it's open source (and free) allowing you to tether your connection, with WiFi, without root. To the carrier, I believe it is indistinguishable from normal data usage. It can also be used as a WiFi repeater. When downloading from GitHub or IzzyOnDroid, there are no in-app purchases. I assume the label on the Play Store version is just for donations.
