my local lowes has been trying to get rid of these for one dollar since xmas eve.
These sound great in theory. But in reality, I've rarely found holiday/yard lights that fit these properly. There seems to always be a reason I can't fit my connections into these things.
If you have a 3D printer, you can make these. Check a 3D printer site, like thingiverse, for "12 gauge extension cord cover." I'm sure there are a lot of different cover types to find, make your own or bookmark to make later.

At Lowe's, the closest I've found is this one [lowes.com], priced at $6.58. I do understand local stores may have different/lower prices (YMMV). I once bought a bunch of roofing materials super cheap at one Lowe's and the next closest Lowe's was selling them at full price and wouldn't price match.

In an ironic twist for a "safety" product, I've recently been thinking about using one of these with zip tie strain reliefs on a cord with a split in the jacket. I know electrical tape won't stay too long, and the snagging hazard posed by a big plastic box isn't particularly subtle or sneaky. Perfect timing.

No, this cord doesn't get rolled up and stored, it's for trickle chargers.

It looks like these protect the connection, but wouldn't prevent the cords from pulling apart, correct?

The box isn't even water proof, so it's likely to accumulate water, which is less ideal than simply letting the connection periodically get rained on.

Looks to me a solution in search of a problem.
