For an excellent budget machine, check out the $500 Turin Legato [espressooutlet.com], or a Breville Bambino Plus. These machines need grinders. You absolutely must grind every dose of espresso beans right before you pull a shot. An exceptional low cost grinder is the $229 Turin DF54 [espressooutlet.com]. You also need a basic scale and a steaming pitcher.
When I say these are excellent budget choices, I mean it. When you use freshly roasted beans, these will deliver espresso with a full bodied flavor that rivals anything you can get at a specialty coffee shop, and clearly better tasting than a Peet's or Starbucks. And the Turin and Bambino Plus machines switch from brewing to steaming instantly; with other machines you make the espresso, then you flip a switch and wait 30-60 seconds for the water to heat up to steam temperature. That's no good.
I realize that this comes to about $750, but you cannot make good espresso for much less. Maybe a Breville Barista, which includes a so-so grinder, but you're much better off with the separate DF54 or a DF64. They give you far better granularity and consistency, which is important in getting a good shot.
