Seller includes an adapter in case you run into this issue. I bought the 12tb model from them, and it's currently in my NAS now.

FWIW, The model WUH721414ALE604 has power disable pin 3 support, which may not play nicely with NAS servers. There are ways around it, google "hack on the SATA connector pin #3"

E604 = 512e SATA 6Gb/s + Power disable pin 3 support + no encryption

Newegg will go out of their way to protect and enable shady/shitty sellers, and their support is terrible. Though this particular seller is fine, I'd try to find their listings somewhere else rather than support Newegg in any way.

This article linked [tomshardware.com] to in other comments here from Tom's Hardware says that they do not recommend using adapters because of a risk of short circuit leading to fires. I cancelled my order after reading that.

I just can't get over the "refurbished" part. That's the only thing I refuse to buy refurbished. Have you guys had good experience buying refurbished drives?
i've had 2 of these wd ultrastars go bad in less than 8 months. seller was serverpartdeals tho. and i had to pay $17 return shipping twice to send them back, such bs.

Every report I've seen with these 14TB WD drives has indicated that smart data was not erased, and that aligns with my own experience. Also none of these drives have 50,000 hours, that's nearly 6 years. More typical is 25-30k hours.
A bit of hyperbole on my part perhaps. I wanted a large number and picked 50K to be a nice large round number for my comment.

Good that the SMART data isn't nuked. So I would know what I am getting.

I assume these come nicely packed (snug as a bug in a rug) that I have read in comments for other deals from GoHardDrive?

The ones I got were fairly well bubble wrapped, but you def wanna run a full read/write test on them before putting them in use all the same.

I bought 4 from their eBay store. All arrived nicely wrapped, but one was DOA. They issued me a pre-paid return label within minutes of my email, but won't ship the replacement until they get the dead one back.

Of the 3 that work, SMART data is all intact with power-on hours of 27870, 39022, and 36272. The long SMART test took about 24 hours to complete and they are now going through badblocks tests (guessing about 5 days for `badblocks -b 4096 -wsv`).

What did you use to do the 24 hour smart test?

3.5" hard drives are used in full desktop PCs or in external enclosures. You can buy an external enclosure for $20 on Amazon.

I received my drive today in decent protection double boxed. 39,000 hours of use. restarted 17 times.
I got the WUH721414ALE604 and not 600.
Drive reads fine in my Sabrent external closure.
Looks good!

My usual routine is to perform a Chkdsk /f /r in an elevated command prompt to a text file. Using prompt $D$S$T$S$P$G to record the start and finish times/dates.

Plus HGST Drive Fitness Test For Windows SMART Short and SMART Extended Tests.

On the aforementioned 18TB easyStores, the Chkdsk took about 16 days.

Used Auto Screen Capture to take snapshots of the WinDFT windows.

The SMART Short Test took about 15 minutes and the SMART Extended Test took about 13 days.

And CrystalDiskInfo before/after the tests, screenshotting/saving the windows.

(I have to remember to shut off stupid Windows Update before I start the long tests. I so absolutely despise, detest, loathe forced reboots after updates!!!)

I am aware of Hard Disk Sentinel. But $33 per machine. However I just noticed a 5 machine Family license (lifetime) for $59. Hmmmm. Also there is Smartmontools.

(I "accidentally" shucked an easyStore 14TB about five years ago. Fortunately the power was off. SMART data is clean, but there is no G-Sense Error Rate type SMART attribute shown in CrystalDiskInfo as there is for a Seagate hard drive. Plus I have had some older Hitachi and HGST drives start to show reallocated sectors. Took them out of service after robocopying the data. So it might be prudent to constantly monitor my other old hard drives.)

You don't, buy a retail normal usb drive. If you don't know it's just going to be trouble for you.

I mean look you've already been recommended an uncooled Amazon enclosure not fit for a server drive on here.

Heres one with a fan costs plenty more

I've got this Sabrent enclosure. I have not modified it yet (remove fan grills and elevated foot pegs) but is sufficient so far. I also accidentally flashed the firmware without hard drive removed and it reversed the fan function. Emailed Sabrent support and they provided step by step instructions on reflashing the firmware with custom Sabrent firmware that fix the fan issue so support was good at least in my experience (contrary to the Amazon reviews)

Fair enough, I also have that one but without the fan, its one where I placed a 120mm case fan on top with spacers.

Basically what I posted before.

Quote from megablank :
Yea when using a dual usb dock I just use an old 120mm fan powered via usb with 5->12v boost adapters sold on Ali. Set on top blowing down with foam or silicone bumper spacer, usb is weak so the fan is slower and it works out. booster https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32...87874.html [aliexpress.us] Spacer https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32...58914.html [aliexpress.us] fan grill https://www.aliexpress.us/item/22...09237.html [aliexpress.us] 35mm m3 https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32...44910.html [aliexpress.us] Running drive without active cooling is asking for it.
But its obviously not cost effective if you don't have case fans from previous deals, and the grills and stuff are only cheap if you buy 10 at a time.

Either way for someone who doesn't know anything at all the easiest solution are the enclosures with doors, which I also have, but its costly, but it does at least stack. Not cost effective either which is why I told them just to get a normal usb drive.

I just removed the cover on the sabrent because its silly.

Of course drives fail, I have had many mechanical failures over the years
I did not mean 'HDDs don't fail', I specifically meant "any parts like actuators, motor bearings, or refilling the helium(sic!)" don't. But of course, some fools could even break their own (censored out).
