About 10 years ago, they had an issue with WIDESPREAD faulty (short lifespan) capacitors.

The manner in which they handled that problem turned me forever against Onkyo (and FYI, I gave them MANY chances at retaining me as a loyal customer).

They couldn't be bothered to do the right thing. So... they are 'permanently banned' in my house & amongst my small circle of close friends.

BTW, I hope OP doesn't take my comment as me crapping on this thread... I'm just stating my own personal experience/facts & also my associated opinions surrounding those facts.

I don't wish any grief upon Onkyo or their employees. I truly hope that Onkyo has since changed their company culture on how they treat their loyal customers, especially when their is a KNOWN systemic problem affecting MANY of their (often premium-priced) products.

And one last thing... notice I just described their products as 'premium priced'.

This 'prepaid premium' is what ultimately made my decision to basically 'forever ban them' a lot easier.

You often pay a premium for a product not only because of the real (or perceived) quality... but also for the steps the company takes to 'make things better', regardless of the cost (w/in reason, obviously).

Sorry for the long post. And... good luck with your Onkyo product! : )

Just buy it and apologize. Better to ask forgiveness than permission.

I have an old Denon 4311. I'm running Audyssey heights and wides. With the help of a little Fosi 2-channel amp, the old workhorse is pushing 11 Klipsch speakers. It's also feeding 4 subs (with the help of two y-connectors). I know this Onkyo would be better, but I also know it does not support Audyssey wides. I've been considering the Denon 6700H, but it's twice as expensive. How do I make this Onkyo work for me?

Maybe go for the 4700H. I got one Open Box on eBay for $980. Very happy with it, it's in a different class than the Onkyo.

It's the same form factor and weight as the Denon 6700H, and you know what that means.

So Audio Science Review does NOT recommend the Onkyo TX-RZ50 since the amplifier section is marginal at best. See https://www.audiosciencereview.com /forum/index.php?threads/onkyo-tx-rz50-review-home-theater-avr.30842/ for their review. Don't forget to take out the spaces.

OK... So the amp section is lacking... What do you think about using the TX-RZ50 as a surround sound preamp/processor? Just add a good multichannel power amp (you chose the number of channels) to the pre-outs...
So I read that same article but they are a highly technical bunch that perform tests in ways that will not happen in normal use.

The AVSForum thread hasn't really reported this perceived issue. Yes the amp did shutdown but most AV pros say that it shouldn't happen in real use.

Same here as mine couldn't last a year. If I press the setup button on the remote, nothing pops up on the TV. All I get is "Please wait"

Imo that's why Onkyo worked out a deal with Dirac and use them to put themselves back in the game.
The gamble worked as you can see how poplar they are.
Dirac is the only reason to even consider them imo.
I know a couple of people that said the same but bought in also.

It would be better only because it has more current features imo.
The wides is the reason this won't work & will cost you to stick to them.
If you do the 6700 is the best option. It hit $1499 about 6 months ago.

If you don't and with 4 subs I would suggest sticking with Denon(or Marantz).
They offer 4 independent sub outs & gain sub EQ HT,access to MultEQ Editor app($20),
and Audyssey's new Directional sub integration RC. Same concept as what Dirac Live Bass Control does.

Speak of Dirac, you have access to both Dirac Live and Dirac Live Bass Control IF you ever want it.

The least expensive would be the 3800 and has hit $900, more commonly $1k.
Since Klipsch fairly efficient speakers that should not be an issue with it.
If it is you can always add an external amp.
FYI all 11 channels are assignable and each channel can be turned off independently while using pre outs via preamp mode.

It's not that it shuts down, but throttles the power as it increases.
He also says that this only happens with 4 and 6 ohm speakers, not 8.
The pre outs don't override this since the internal amps continue to draw power( not turn off).

That said people should read all that with the grain of salt imo.
Often people understand that most those measurements are not audible.
So if they are a sonic benefit or downfall is all in the ear of the beholder and just a paper debate.

I have recommended this in prior RZ50 deal threads, especially if speakers are 4 ohm nominal!
There are many claims that there is no issue w/low impedance speakers. I wonder how many of these owners are volunteering that their system is powered externally? Wink

The ASR review is technical and perhaps this idea is entirely lost on those who claim "there is no issue w/the RZ50". The reason I call it a "stealth protection mode" is because the AVR doesn't actually shut down and make it obvious that power has been reduced/cut! In the real world (again typically w/low impedance speakers), during very challenging scenes in movies or even dynamic music there will be a noticeable reduction in quality and this has led some folks to return the AVR, even if they don't know exactly what happened! For the record, at least one Slickdeal member was unsatisfied w/the sound on his 4 ohm Martin Logans and ended up returning the RZ50 (I have read similar stories on the AVS and ASR threads as well).

In summary, the RZ50's success is largely aided by:
1) Many folks having 8 ohm nominal speakers
2) Most folks are not audiophiles and can't quite articulate the throttling (i.e. fewer complaints)
3) Its popularity as a prepro where the faults of the amp are entirely ignored
4) Its use as a 3rd or 4th receiver in a smaller room. No one's blasting the volume in a tighter listening area!

Volkswagen was crucified for its diesel/emissions scandal! Why does Onkyo/Pioneer/Integra (Voxx) get a pass? There aren't too many mass market brands to choose from...

I was still using the Onkyo HT-RC360 until last year when I upgraded to Yammy A4A. I did back in the day have the bad HDMI solder issue. It was fixed for free and no shipping charges out of my pocket. I will keep it forever. My 1st AVR. I think the amplifier is stronger on my old Onkyo.

I keep going between this and the Denon 3800...

I just can't pull the trigger on the RZ50 because I've heard it can't properly tune 2 subs and also has a global crossover... and I don't want to buy extra equipment just to tune my subs. Patiently waiting for a deal on the Denon that isn't a refurb.
