Tempted but really don't want to go back to having to use lightning cables again. USB-C version should be coming later this year (though rumored not to have any significant upgrades over this version)

Nice. You still get 10% back in total with any Amazon credit card. That takes care of tax and gets you an extra few percent off. Decided to add AppleCare Plus since I read they basically give you a new pair if anything goes wrong in the 2 year period.

Edit: 10% off looks like it's gone it was a limited time offer

I see the 10% off for the space gray + applecare. It's hidden in the checkout window you have to click on the payment method.

Depends how you plan to use them.

If you primarily want them for on the go and travel, the XM4 fold down, have a better case, and are cheaper. Sound quality is subjective, but they're both very, very good. Both have top notch noise-cancelling, too.

Where AirPods shine is home use, if you're in the Apple ecosystem. I have Apple TVs on all of my screens: living room, home theater, bedroom, garage. When I pop out my airpods, they connect automatically. Call on my iPhone, or Zoom meeting on my Mac - transition seamlessly. And the range is outstanding. I can start watching a game/news/whatever in my living room, go downstairs to work in the garage, upstairs to fold laundry, outside to check the mail, and never lose signal. Can't do that with bluetooth (yet). So if you're deep in the Apple ecosystem, they're worth paying extra for. If not, save some money with Sony.

Returning the engraved ones I just ordered from Apple for my wife's birthday as soon as they arrive. Just ordered from Amazon with Apple Care + and still saved $100.

coulda swore I saw the sony xm4s brand new on sale for $199.99 just like last week. I would purchase two pairs of those for the price of one pair of air pod maxes without thinking twice. i went from xm2 > xm4 and all of my friends of course own air pod maxes so i've tried them on and even used them for short flights. i dont think the sony xm4s are decisively better in any category but they go toe to toe with the air pod maxes and are marginally better in some (like comfort + nc imho). so with that being said, I cannot justify the maxes being 2x the price of the xm4s so yeah.

Agree with Sonys they're pretty good. I bought my xm3's like 6 years ago and use them when I travel internationally (I'm too scared to travel with the airpod max lol)
The only things suspected in the leaks / rumor mill for this refresh is USB-C and new colors, no lossless audio. But it's also likely just a refresh like they did with the AirPod Pro 2s where they went from lightning to USB-C vs coming out with a new model version.

Fingers crossed all those rumors and leaks get proven wrong though!

Compare these to other NC headphones. These are high on style and good on sound. The problem is that other good NC headphones are much less. Sony, Bowers, Sennheiser all make better, less expensive NC headphones. I'm not a Bose fan, but some swear by them. For a bit more, you can get Focal Bathys.

I love my airpods max, but that issue where one of the cups gets disconnected then the whole headset has to go through some kind of reset before it re-connects is super annoying. I've tried a bunch of things to fix it to no avail. Did they ever fix that issue or is the design the same? If it wasn't for this one issue (which seems to affect a lot of people) I'd highly recommend.

Does AppleCare cover wear? One of the bigger complaints I see with these is the finish peeling off.

As long as you get the apple care it doesn't matter imo. What you're saving pays for the apple care and you're still covered within the same 2 year period. Might as well save the money.
