From mackdack that I always use for reference :

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

The 923+ does transcode, it just doesn't have GPU acceleration.

Not on these consumer models, only the higher end like DS1823xs+ or DS2422+. There is a script on Reddit to get rid of warnings for those.

I have 3 Synology NAS and all add running non-Synology drives. I don't get any warnings.

Sort of. If your drive is not on their very small compatibility list then you get that nag and sometimes don't get SMART data. I was not a fan and sent mine back after running into this issue. B&H customer service was top notch and took it back without a return fee and paid for return shipping.
