Based on the way my i12 was "inspected" at Best Buy, if it powers up then it's good
Thank you. I just placed an order. I have a $300 BB gift card that I got by trading in Motorola Edge+ phone that I bought from Boost Mobile last year for around $170.

I used www.sellcell.com [sellcell.com] and it showed a new-in-box Pixel 8 is around $320, and an open box, flawless is around $300. You can probably get more selling on Swappa, or other places but I hate dealing with individual buyers. So I'll sell to GadgetPickup which is a reseller that I've sold a few phones to.
Thanks. That is very helpful.
Did you think of trading in an iPhone 11 as well? I have 3 of them lying around from previous metro deals.

Wondering whether it's a good idea to trade now or to wait for Pixel 9.

The 12 uses oxygenos and it's fine. I do like pure android but it's totally usable. Definitely not crazy bloated like a carrier phone would be either. A few apps that are easily removable. It feels to me like a theme on top of stock android more than a repacked os
awesome, good to know

I was not already a Verizon customer. I picked the lowest-cost plan ($75 w/o autopay) when ordering the phone on Best Buy web site. When I picked up the phone, a Verizon SIM was attached to the box, without any kind of instructions to activate. But I got some helpful info from member ProudToBeAnIdian on how to proceed. Here's how it went.
* I created a Verizon account on Verizon web site. They asked for my name, address, email, etc but the SS# and DL info were already provided when ordering through Best Buy in order for Verizon to check my credit. Then it asked me to provide my new Verizon phone number or accout number. I checked "I'lll do it later", then logged out.
* I put the SIM in an unlocked Moto G Pure (because I want to sell the Pixel 8 as new-in-box). The SIM was automatically activated and assigned a new Verizon phone number.
* I logged back into my VZ account and linked the new phone number to the account. I looked at a preview of the 1st bill and it was $126.86 including taxes & fees and $35 activation fee. Each month after that is $81.37. Damn, they're expensive for just one line.
* I selected Chat while logged in, told the bot that I wanted to cancel service, it gave me the option to cancel service myself or via a rep, I chose to do it myself WHICH WAS A BAD DECISION. The bot submitted the cancel request but said service would be disconnected on Aug 17, that means I have to pay the full 1st month. That's NOT what I wanted.
* I started a new Chat and asked for "Agent". A live agent connected (without a name, let's assume it was a female) and asked what I needed. I told her that I wanted to cancel because the VZ signal is so weak at my location (that's a fib). She wanted to try some trouble shooting first. I said OK. She told me to do a Network Reset on the phone and let her know if it got better. I did the reset and told her that I still got only 1 bar with VZ but the same phone got 4 bars with T-mo (that's another fib). She said she needed to get a supervisor to cancel the pending request that the bot submitted.
* After 5 minutes or so, she said she got the pending request deleted and was ready to cancel service right away. I asked her to proceed which she did. After that, my account showed service disconnected and the bill preview showed an expected bill of $7.56 (for one day of service + taxes & fees I guess). Since the account shows No Payment Method On File, I guess they'll mail me a bill, but I plan to log in after a few days and pay the bill online if I can.

I hope all that was helpful to someone.
Thanks for sharing. Did you also confirm that activation of $35 was waived?

Trade in a 256gb 12 Pro Max with a new battery for a Pixel 8 Pro? I know I could sell it locally for $400 but would rather get rid of it this way. Good or bad idea? Already have a 13PM and some Samsungs but have never tried a Pixel.

Is it worth trading in my iPhone 12 for this pixel 8.

I am a bit worrried about losing iMessage and facetime, always liked android though
RCS is on iPhone now so expect the same messaging as Imessage such as read receipts, typing indicators, higher quality imagines when sending over RCS, longer videos, etc,.

Likely not. I've sold two Metro-unlocked i11's to GadgetPickup, one for $197 and one for $169. I have 4 remaining iPhone11's (two from Total Wireless and two from Metro). With their price slowly dropping, I expect the offer to be around $150-$160 each when they get unlocked (two at the end of July, two in early September).

The Pixel 8 deal that requires activating & cancelling with Verizon was too stressful for me. The Pixel 8 without required activation costs $549. Trading in an i11 for $415 means paying $134 + sales tax = $146 for me. I just set up an order to sell my new-in-box Pixel 8 to GadgetPickup for $323, but for a new phone they'll pay out only by Paypal which means around $10 in Paypal fee, getting $313. Doing that deal will net me $313 - $146 = $167. I can sell an i11 to GadgetPickup for close to that amount without all the work.

Just a heads up.. Pixel 9 Series is launching next month
True, but the Pixel 9 is likely to be very similar to the Pixel 8. Google originally planned to launch their in-house designed Tensor CPU (fabbed at TSMC) in the Pixel 9, but they couldn't get it working in time.

So, they're using a sight upgrade of last year's mostly-Samsung CPU in the Pixel 9.

The real upgrade will be the Pixel 10.

I don't see an activation fee in the estimated bill.

They should have done this when the 8 came out, not a few weeks before the 9 is coming out.

Thanks again. Appreciate all the details.
Did you not trade iPhone 12 for Pixel 8 by activating with Verizon? If someone trades an iPhone 11 for Pixel 8 by activating with Verizon their net would also be very low, close to $34.

Just saying that the difference between iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 trade in is only $30. To me an iPhone 12 is a much better phone than iPhone 11 because it supports 5g and has a faster processor.

I also have a couple of Pixel 7 lying around but their trade in value is only $260.
That is the trouble with Google phones. They don't hold their value at all.

I did trade-in my i12 for the Pixel 8 and activated with Verizon. But the experience of working with a Chat agent to get service cancelled was too stressful for me, I don't want to go through it again. There is always a risk that the agent refuses to cancel it right away and makes you wait a month, with the big 1st-month bill .

Yes, the i12 is a much better phone than the i11 (OLED screen, 5G, faster) but its value for trade-in or selling to a reseller is only about $30 higher. Kind of weird.
