I love my Sony OLED 77", not going to lie tho, they have me puzzled putting a mini LED into the Bravia 9 this year, which is their flagship model. Is their new mini LED dynamic backlighting actually superior to OLED? They must think so, to not put OLED into their flagship tv
Mini LED has its perks but even rtings gave the Bravia 8 better rating. Bravia 9 faired better with brightness, but it's hard to beat the OLED color pop and blacks.

No worries! The Bravia 8 is barely an upgrade over the A80L. It's like 10% brighter and it finally uses a glossy panel unlike the previous Sony OLEDs that used a semi gloss finish (A80J 55"-65", A80K, A80L except the 83" model with a glossy panel).
If I have a room with a few windows, does "finally uses a glossy panel" mean that it would be very reflective?

Unfortunately, yes. I meant finally glossy because glossy panels provide better color reproduction and better perceived contrast. I think if you were to use blackout curtains, you'd be fine.

Was checking their latest mini LED display last week at BB the difference is night and day compared to OLED side by side, black still look grey like any led and the colors look anemic compared to oled

I saw it first time at best buy side by side to a95. It is fantastic. I couldn't decide which I preferred..the 9 was noticeably brighter.

However I would NOT pay the Sony tax on their bravia 8 OLED. It never impressed enough compared to the differences of their Mini-Led or A95 vs competitor

I can guarantee you the settings must have been way off..Blacks were blacks on bravia 9. It's not subjective, it's fact. Now if you prefer OLED for other reasons, OK, but saying blacks look gray is wrong or broken set

I don't know why OLED fans feel compelled to bash everything else. I love both if they're good sets. To say one or the other is trash of massive gaps in quality is inaccurate.

The bravia 8 is NOT better than 9. If however you always prefer OLED, and watch in dark rooms, then I'd personally recommend either. Otherwise, if you have ever been accustomed to bright screens, bravia 8 will disappoint. The key here being if you have been used to bright screens.

I used to think my C1 was best ever. It was my first modern TV since 2012. However, since then I've replaced remaining 4 TVs, one being 85" X95K, a C2 and S90C.

Now the C1, C2 simply too dim unless dark, and S90C is OK but I'm now used to x95k picture quality, and spoiled.

So context is everything.

Thanks for all your input on this thread. We're also in a sunny room with a Toshiba TV from 2010. Would this Sony OLED be brighter than the set we're looking to replace? Or are OLEDs just dim? It's hard to tell at the store. For some context about our old TV: "When viewing content in a brightly-lit room, you will typically only need a screen brightness of 200 cd/m2 but the Toshiba 46SL412U can display a picture of up to 367.37 cd/m 2 which is more than enough."

There's many kinds of sunny rooms..there's Florida condo with floor to ceiling windows facing west, and sunroom in the woods under canopy of trees.. and everything in between.

My C1 can get brighter but in the awful vivid mode where everything is blown up and out. However it's bright enough in a bedroom during the day with a few regular window open. Would I prefer brighter still? Yes, but not really for a bedroom and remember I'm used to a very bright main TV already...

Short answer, unless you're in highrise facing sunset, you'll be fine with bravia 8

Sony Bravia is a good line of TVs for Sony. I've had mine for 7 years now and no issues. I think it's the best TV brand and my next TV will also be a Bravia.

Was all in on getting an OLED but now reading about motion/stutter issues, black crush and noticeable banding. Hard to justify the amount they charge and having those issues. Both the G4 and A95L are prone to those issues.
