At $200 vs. $300 for the 10th gen, this is probably a better deal. 3 and 4GB of RAM is going to lead to lots of page refreshing when switching between browser tabs or between the browser and another app. A lot of sites that have continuous scrolling or lots of embedded media and javascript will refresh even when not in the background. This gets incredibly annoying. Chrome is almost unusable with 3GB and javascript on. Safari handles it better.
USB-C on the 10th gen is limited to the same data transfer rate as lightning, but you can play videos directly off of a usb c thumb and a player like VLC. The 9th gen needs the camera adapter and the adapter needs to be connected to a charger to use most non-lightning thumb drives and playing media off of a lightning drive is much less straightforward. The M1 Air at $400 is going to hold up a lot longer with double the RAM of the 10th gen and it has a full 10Gbps usb 3.2 interface, so transferring files to and from an external drive can be up to 30 times faster. The matching keyboard folio is dirt cheap used and locks into position, so it's a much more stable stand than the 10th gen's kickstand and floppy Magic Keyboard. It's also compatible with the ipad pro Magic Keyboard, which has a similar stability advantage and allows you to connect a charger and a usb device simultaneously without needing a hub. This is really nice when you need to charge and use wired headphones. On that note, Apple's usb-c headphone adapter is really quite good and is substantially better than the lightning adapter. It has enough power to drive my 250 ohm DT770s to reasonable listening levels, where the lightning adapter can't.
You'll also get 2-3 years more major OS updates with the M1 vs. the 9th gen. It's hard to tell with the 10th gen. It may get dropped sooner than the M1 due to its RAM limitations. The 6th gen with 2GB is getting dropped in 18 while devices with the same CPU and 3GB are getting the update.

You get a lot more for the $50 upgrade to the 10th gen.

10.9 inch screen vs 10.2
Usb-c native
12mp 4k camera vs 8mp 1080p
Surround sound speakers
WiFi 6 vs WiFi 5
Supports new gen Apple Pencil and magic folio.
And of course better processor.

People aren't just on slickdeals for deals but also knowledge sharing and recommendations. Lots of people are on the fence between the models. If I can get 3 more years out of the 10th gen vs 9th gen I say it's well worth the $50.

The 9th gen is from 2021. But obviously get what works with your lifestyle. This is still an awesome price but I'm hoping the 10th gen gets a better price for a little more $$

USB-C vs lightning port is the main reason I would want a newer iOS device... Just one less cable to carry around

Just picked one up. Got 5% off with Target Circle Card and another $15 in Target Circle Rewards because I spent a certain amount of money or something (had to activate that deal though and may be YMMV).

People complaining about only 3GB of RAM... well... look at the price....

And if you can get 10th gen for only $50 more, well then post how to do it! I would gladly pay $50 more for 10th gen... but it's not $50 more.....

I got the 9th gen and used it for a few weeks. It occasionally lagged, and I felt disappointed having a device that seemed 'old.' I figured if I saved enough for an iPad, I might as well get something that looked and felt new. I returned it and got the 10th gen, and I have no regrets. The screen is bigger and better, and the speakers are much improved. I mostly use it for watching videos, and I can't tell the difference between it and the Air. That said, I don't think my parents would notice or care about the difference.

yeah ... ipad 9th gen for 199 or the ipad 10th gen for 299 dollars. I mostly use it as very casual user for surfing and media consumption and both model screens seem good to me. In a few years I will update to newer IPAD/AIR/PRO when the price is right and features are amazing. For today, I'm set with 199 dollar New IPAD 9th gen. And you are set with the IPAD 10th gen. Happy campers. Peace.

i would usually agree with you... but it's 200. i agree with you about the parents. I think this is where this 'deal' really shines. upgrades for ppl who don't rly care and/or older parents as well as kids who will probably break them. my mom uses an air 2 from 2014? so this would be a huge upgrade for her... and for 200.. that's good value and a huge qol for her.

My wife and I were both using Air 2s until about two weeks ago. We use 9th Gens at work and they're pretty well loaded down with apps and MDM software and such, and they're still plenty fast. I was going to upgrade her to one of these, but ended up going with the 10th Gen just because we recently updated her iPhone to a USB-C model and she had no other Lightning accessories.

For me, I'm also using an Apple keyboard and touchpad that use lightning, my AirPods are still lightning, and our work tablets and phones still use lightning, so it made more sense for me to get a Gen 9.

We both use them mostly as couch/bed devices and I can't tell any performance difference. Visually the 10G is nicer but not worth $150+.
Thanks for this. I picked up the 9th gen from Target @ $190 (with RC discount)

it's not a gamble and it's only $200. The vast majority of people who are buying this model will tend to use it for Internet browsing, email, movies and such. It's plenty good for that. Not quite sure why you came on here to TC if you aren't buying it
I gave it a thumb up. It's a great price for an iPad, I just don't feel it as an impulsive buy.

Surprised they still have them in stock or even at the $200 price. Looks like they are unloading them for a 10th gen Black Friday deal.

Maybe the 10th gen goes as low as $250?

Agree with this. I have two old iPads that are pretty much useless because they aren't supported anymore. Not even YouTube works.

I also had this deal - $15 in target rewards if you spend $140 on your red card. So you get the 5% and the $15. You can split payments too which I did bc I still had some gift card funds leftover from the holiday 10% gift card deal
