Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

AT&T phone guys, @danthemanx07, I spoke to Customer service and they asked me to ignore all the customer summary. Assured me that line gets activated when I receive the phone and activate it myself. Its not from the day of shipment. How come its different for you guys ?

The line gets activated right before shipment. You will also get an email about that. Many CS reps are known to give our wrong info. The phone will activate once you get it.

The chat rep said to download transcript for future reference and assured that line billing will start when I activate the line by going to link on att to activate line. He asked me to ignore all of the summary. I will talk to other chat rep. I am thinking that since h2o method worked for someone here, I do that directly. Since it's flex phone, so first activation of h2o will work. If needed, I can have att prepaid / postpaid later for activation ? Your thoughts ?

Yeah, you can go H2O route and sim swap if you want to avoid activation fee etc.

you were right, another chat rep said my line was activated yesterday ( I received ship email yesterday by lasership, even though tracking still says label created only). Walmart says delivery by nov 24, but I only have till tomorrow (nov 20 through nov 22) to cancel and avoid activation fee. OR, I fight with them later to waive activation fee stating it should have been activated when I received phone. that way I can use att sim swap instead of h2o. What do you think is more proven way to get unlocked ? Thanks in advance, I appreciate all your efforts and responses.

So the activation fee is the fee associates with the line, not the phone so the clock will start once the line is created so I don't think you can fight with them on that. H2O uses the ATT network so at the end of the day the chances of unlock is the same as ATT but with phone activation on ATT you do have a case on your hand to get it unlocked after 60 days (even without an active ATT account) as per their policy. Then you might be ending up paying $35 activation fee.

Another thing people don't realize when ATT sends the first bill there is a link under the activation fee on the lines of "don't recognize this fee". that is automatic and instant refund and it does not depend on days since activation. ATT waives this fee as one time favor I think one time in 6 months/year. So you can most probably get it refunded that way. See wiki of this thread https://slickdeals.net/f/17327499-oneplus-nord-n30-5g-128gb-unlocked-chromatic-gray-cph2513-best-buy-0 for more info on ATT account/bill etc.

Also see wiki of https://slickdeals.net/f/17428848-samsung-galaxy-s23-128gb-phantom-black-at-t-s23-att-349-with-new-account-249?attrsrc=Thread%3AExpired%3ATrue&src=SiteSearchV2Algo1 for physical SIM swap which should be similar to what you should do with eSIM.

So, if I were you, I'll risk paying the activation fee and try the SIM swap on ATT.

Thank you! Going per recommendation Smilie. Have paid off the phone already.

Just wanted to share my experience. Thanks to the SD community.
I ordered the phone from Walmart from Verizon on nov 13. Received the phone on 19th. (The lasership tracking sucks it gave wrong info that the item was not received while the fact was it was already moving in their system). Once I got the phone activated (eSIM) and using the new phone number, created an account on Verizon app. Added the credit card.
Called 611 and chose the option to pay off from the automated menu. Paid the $299. Tried calling VZ CS but they close at 7PM est. so next day called from a different phone and asked to cancel service. The agent asked why and I told I don't get proper signal in basement. He said it will stop by end of billing month. I asked why they could not cancel immediately then he cancelled it with effect immediately. If you don't check they will do it end of billing month. Note for their system billing month starts when the phone was shipped not activated. When it was deactivated weird the app also stopped working.
Next day I called to ask for the final bill and was told it was $149. I told I cancelled within a day. The agent checked the delivery and confirmed it and gave credit and said the final bill is $14$ and could be lower once prorated fees kick in. I asked to pay off using the credit card on file. She took care of it.
now have to wait for 60 days.

Looks like I got my final bill after terminating 4th day after line activated (5th day after order placed) ... $59.13. Note sure how they got to that total but I guess that's about right.
