I have one of these.

If you crossflash it to BP60NB10, you can get faster speeds (for the same price). Downgrading the firmware (it has to be a BP60NB10 to work) makes it into a "4K friendly blu-ray drive" (can read 4K Blu-rays.

You can get instructions for this at the "Ultimate UHD Drives Flashing Guide Updated 2024" on the makemkv forums. Make sure you use Marty's SDF GUI (as I did).

Just bought this drive a few months ago. I also flashed it to the BP60NB10 firmware. Works fine. Not the quietest thing and it makes a weird spinning up and spinning down noise occasionally when the drive is idling with a disc installed. Should be a good option for someone looking to rip Blu-rays.

Also for anyone looking to burn your own discs, be sure you're familiar with the Blu-ray standards if you want to play on a Blu-ray player. Also it'd be in your best interest to acquire some rewritable discs since it's easy to mess up.

Watch your favorite movies and tv shows, rip them to your plex server, burn a disc with family pictures and videos, loan it to a friend along with a movie to watch.

Is that bad?
It's not "bad". It's a compatibility issue. Micro-USB was once the standard. This is an old model.

This thing is sooo old (9 years)! Why is it still even on the market? It appears that it's not compatible with Windows 10 or 11 (out of the box)! Is there a fix for this? Thanks!
The one I got from Best Buy two months ago says windows 10 compatible right on the box. I haven't had any issues with windows 11. I don't even remember having to go out of my way to install drivers. I assume windows update took care of it. Can't remember but it wasn't difficult to get to work. As for it being old, this thing can handle 4k after flashing the firmware. I'm not sure being "old" means much here other than using micro-USB. In fact, mine was manufactured in May 2024

Is this good for ripping Blu Rays, DVDs, or 4K Blu Rays?

Can this rip UHD/4k Blu-Ray?

Quote from FeistyBreakfast428 :
You can flash the firmware to play/rip 4k Blu-rays if that's what you're asking. If you're writing to BD-XL discs I imagine you could use up to the full 100GB but if you want to author a disc, the consensus seems to be you can only use up to about 66GBs

How to?

I believe you just have to follow the same steps EngineerDude mentioned to play 4k as to rip 4k but I'm not 100% as I haven't ripped anything yet.

I have this. Great for ripping. Don't try to watch blurays on your pc though. The amount of drm hoops you have to jump through are not worth it.

Public libraries have a large number of DVDs and a few Blur-rays available for borrowing.
