I'm not a gamer myself, but this system is significantly more powerful than a Raspberry Pi without a doubt. There is a Linux distro called Batocera.Linux (https://batocera.org/) that is supposedly a turn-key solution for turning mini pc's like this into gaming consoles. Besides that, this comes with an apparently legit copy of Win 11 Pro as part of the $130 price tag.

Anyway, if your goal is retro gaming, a Raspberry Pi is smaller and more energy-efficient for these types of tasks, but honestly, once you add in a case, a good power supply (RPi's are picky with respect to power...), and storage, it is probably at the same price or even more than this $130 machine. But if you are interested in more modern gaming or more powerful emulation, this system would be better and give you more flexibility for future upgrades.

Fyi check out Reddit minipc forum, some users mention that these effectively have ZERO warranty.

Just saying buyers might want to read up.

N150 is a minor bump-up from N100

Is this better than a raspberry pi for the guts of an arcade build?
I've been wanting to build a cab. Are you buying the cabinet and then just getting parts separately?

They work great as a dedicated plex server / stream box. I put a 32gb ram stick in and it's been excellent for a plex box.
what ram did you go with? I tried this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1) and the system doesn't boot. Swap back to the stock ram and everything is good.

Is this suitable to pair with a monitor for a home desktop computer NOT specifically for gaming? Really just some specific internet based programs, office, PDF, and web browsing? Not familiar with mini PCs other offerings from HP and Lenovo which are much pricier. Thanks!

These things are actively cooled and I for one don't like that. I bought 2 NUCs and the fan failed in both of them within 6 months. The Pi might be less powerful but it's passively cooled... One less thing to break. The Pi hardware is also a lot more standardized than these NUCs... If you don't want to worry about dealing with drivers etc after you have to replace your failed NUC with a different brand or model in the future, that could be another compelling reason to choose a Pi over a NUC.
pi5's sort of need a fan (if you are going to push them at all).
pi4 and below you can get by with passive cooling (mostly)

since all of them come from china, basically the cost of returning them would invalidate using any warranty you have. basically spend less than $200 when going with one of the chinese mini pcs sold online and accept, its a paperweight or parts if/when it dies. some of them last for years. some of them for months. it is a coinflip and the risk when buying one of these.

This computer would do well with all the tasks you mentioned.

8GB DDR4 is not ideal. These systems with one channel memory really benefit from DDR5, and I'd recommend 16GB in '25 as a minimum. As this motherboard will only accept DDR4, if it were me I'd pass up for a similar offering that has 16GB (or more) DDR5.

Just FYI for anyone looking to use this as a media server, I just returned the G5 (N97) variant of this machine. The N97 is a newer and more capable version of this model with slightly higher power consumption. Tried it out and while it does work quite well with the QSV encoder for the integrated UHD graphics, it fails on some media formats. After a ton of research and configuration changes, I was never able to get it to stream live tv or some MKV formats. I'm not saying it's impossible as someone more capable than myself might be able to figure it out, but out of the box install of Jellyfin (Plex would work as well) on a fresh Win 10 install would have issues with some formats.
That said, it does work nicely for what it can do and it's really tiny. If I wanted a dedicated emulation box, a batocera install on this would net you a capable 16 bit machine up to some PS1 and Dreamcast. Don't expect to run anything higher with any reliability as the integrated graphics do have their limit.

Can this be a hackintosh?
I was chasing the hackintosh thing off and on for a while and never really got down to doing it right. Admittedly, I guess I didn't put in the work to fully learn everything. I recently was going to give it another go and ultimately bought a 2014 Mac mini with decent specs for $135 on eBay.

as far as i know the N97 is the older variant, and benchmarks seem to put them at best as equals most of the time, with the N150 occasionally being a hair better. the n150 cpu uses half the power of the 97, which is to say ~6 watts less or so Smilie

For $20 more you can get an N97 (faster) with 16GB DDR5 and 512GB storage. It is not a recognized brand but I ordered one and reviews along with mine say it runs great. Not sure how the warranty would work if needed to be used.

At the moment, I am using mine to retrieve a dataset that is recycled every 24 hours. So I have it download the data every six hours. I like the machine because it is virtually silent, and pulls much less electricity than even the Dell micro form factor machines. This is completely underutilizing the machine--it can do so much more. I have a kill-a-watt so eventually I hook that up to check how much electricity it is using.

This is a decent price for these specs, but I would want a little more storage and memory. Amazon has these mini PCs listed multiple times for the same models with the same specs, and they go on random coupon sales all the time. When I was in the market for a mini PC, I searched on Amazon, found about 15 listings, and kept track of them for a few months until they went on a good sale.
