Pixel 8 still had bad optical fingerprint sensor. Pixel 9 has the ultrasonic sensor which is much better. Could never use my Pixel 7 (from a past mint deal) due to the horrific optical fingerprint sensor. The Moto ThinkPhone optical sensor and software by comparison works nearly 100%.

Edit: So I couldn't resist, and ended up buying a Pixel 8 to try out. It turns out the Pixel 8 fingerprint reader is vastly improved from the horrid Pixel 7 fingerprint reader. It's amazing how much better it is, in just 1 generation. The Pixel 8 fingerprint reader has worked 100% for me, just as good as the Moto ThinkPhone fingerprint reader. Very impressive.

One odd thing - when I first set it up, the facial recognition was the only option, and the fingerprint reader setting was missing. After a restart, the fingerprint reader option became visible.

I don't disagree. My workaround is to register my thumb multiple times (3 in my case). Any little variances in the read will better match a larger pool of registered fingers. Not a perfect solution but it definitely helps.

If you are a customer which is pretty easy without a year of service the phone is 399.00. There was a promo for a year's service but that's not what I'm referencing. I have mint and can purchase it without buying any additional plan.
So if I do the 3 month or 1 month plan I can get it for 399?

How to lose money 101. These devices lose value so fast even at this price, you'll never recover.
Everyone knows iPhones are the only ones that retain their value to a reasonable degree. Take this deal if you want a pixel and don't want to wait 3-6 months for the pixel 9 to reach that territory. It's not that big of an upgrade outside the fingerprint sensor, and the 8 is smaller and lighter if a compact phone is what you're after.

It's really not that bad, especially compared to the 6 or 7

No, you pay $580 with a 1-year plan, plus $60-$70 in taxes and fees. So saying "Mint sells the Pixel 9 for 399.00 brand new" is not honest.

Interesting, I've had a 7 Pro for 3 years or however long it's been out and I've never had an issue with the fingerprint sensor. Good to know the new one is better though, I might be due for an upgrade pretty soon.

For those of us who keep a phone for a long time, that's irrelevant. I keep my phones at least 5 years, and after that long, none of them are worth much, regardless of brand.

If you're already a mint customer the phone can be purchased at that $400 price point and the only drawback is the phone is locked to mint for 60 days.
