The 1st gen doesn't really work with cases. The 2nd gen has adaptors that give more space so you can use cases. I would recommend getting the 2nd gen. It was on sale for like 70 with a case recently.

The gen 1 is very snug on the Max models without a case, won't work with a case at all on the max. Check out the subreddit and you will see many complaints about it or how it just barely works.
