Debating moving on (finally) from my 2020 85" Vizio PQX (https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews...tum-x-2020)..

Assuming this would be an upgrade? (Other than size wise, obviously..)

Yes it is definitely an upgrade. I upgraded from an early generation 65 LG OLED and a 110 inch projection screen (BenQ HT2050) and I'm very happy with the difference in PQ. I'm so happy with Mini LED (no burn in issues to worry about), I ended up getting the TCL 85QM851 as well.

How's this 2023 Hisense U8 compare to the 2024 TCL QM851?

I've been looking for deals on the Benq TK710 for months and they just raised the price by $200 to $1999. Makes it REALLY hard to justify getting another projector vs. one of these new 100" tv's.

Taking into consideration that my TCL QM851 is 85 inches and my Hisense U8K is 100 inches, the picture quality of the TCL is slightly better. However, there's a lot to consider here as I have the Hisense in a bright living room and the TCL in a more light controlled bedroom. The build quality of the TCL is better/sleeker since it is much slimmer than the Hisense. It's the same built with 98 inch TCL QM851 which I saw at the Best Buy store. The warranty on the TCL is only 1 year whereas the Hisense is 2 years. Pricewise, the TCL is usually a couple of hundred more than the Hisense within the same size range. If I can get the TCL 98QM851 for the same price as the Hisense 100U8K, I'd take the TCL even if the warranty is only a year and it's 2 inches smaller than the Hisense . However, the TCL 98QM851 is $4K (Sold Out) now so the big difference in price makes the Hisense a much better value right now.

If you're in the market for a big screen TV, I'd buy now since I'm almost sure that prices for 2024/2025 TVs are bound to go up due to the tariffs that are in effect now. Remember that TCL and Hisense are both manufactured in China/Mexico so once the current inventory is depleted then expect a price increase .

Technically QM851 is "far" superior with 5000 Zones&5000Nits vs. 1500 Zones & 1600 nits of U8 but real life difference may not reflect this difference. QM851 shall provide more/closest OLED-like experience. I remember a user review about inferior black levels of 100U8 since its panel is not the same one that Hisense deployed with smaller U8 models. U8 should be comparable with QM751 (1500 Zones & 2400 nits). It would be really a good deal if prices around 2K since 98QM751 was sold/being sold from time to time at this price and 98 QM851 was sold for 3K before.

I'd compare the Hisense U8K more with the 2023 TCL QM850. Most reviews have these models almost on par with each other although I personally did not get a chance to see the TCL QM850 in person. I'd say the TCL QM751 is comparable to the Hisense U7 Series while the TCL QM851 is comparable to the Hisense U8N.

By categorization maybe but specs-wise 98QM851 has a lot more zones and brightness compared with 100U8N as well. Some of the model names might be different in USA vs Europe BTW. Pure specs do not mean same level of difference in real life user experience. Anything over TCL QM751 is actually a very good TV when price is right in this segment. I am waiting for mid-level and high-end 98/100 inch minileds for a possible size-upgrade. I have 77G4. It is very good TV but I also used to have Epson LS-800 with 120 inch ALR screen. Cant compete with modern TVs in PQ but screen real estate is/was really nice to have. So looking for a compromise for price, PQ and size with big minileds. OLED prices in this size is just ridiculous

I agree about the immersion factor of the big screen as I also used to have a 110 inch screen for my BenQ projector. For movies and sports, watching on a bigger screen is preferable and I'm willing to sacrifice a little of the PQ.
As for real life user experience, although I own both the Hisense U8K and the TCL QM851, it's still hard to compare them since they are in different rooms and of course, one is 85inches the other is 100. What I know is I'm happy with both of them and would not go back to my BenQ or to my smaller 65 inch LG OLED ( delegated to a guest bedroom). I'd give the TCL a slight edge on picture quality and a big advantage on the form factor( thinner overall) but I will not pay an extra $1K for it. Now if only the TCL 115QM891G would go down to $5K , then maybe I'd get a bigger house to accommodate that monster lol 😆

The sentence I bolded is so true

These Chinese panels have some crazy specs that make them look amazing on paper and thy do have some moments of brilliance...but they also have pitfalls

I own the Hisense U8H in a 65 and the Hisense U8N in a 55
Black levels and brightness are off the chain..they also do well with controlling blooming

But accuracy and picture processing are their downfall. One could make a point that giving up some black level and brightness along with some better picture processing is more enjoyable

I own a couple of Samsungs...QN90A and QN90C and they are just all around better televisions than the Hisense units are

Then there is some occasional and unexplained bugginess with the Hisense units as well that require a restart...E-ARC stops working, wifi drops

I was using LS800+ALR Screen combo in one room and a 75 inch miniled TV in another room. Although screen real estate is really attractive for movies and games, I found myself using the TV more because of overall PQ and brightness from a shorter distance of course. Then I switched to 77G4 as primary TV and my first OLED. It is a whole different world. Really hard to go back to any other screen tech and I would love to get 115QM but yeah its price is kinda prohibitive so I think I will settle for a 98/100 inch miniled as PQ/Size compromise.

Yep Chinese TVs are really competitive with good specs and prices but the picture processing of Sony (also got one with XR processor) and LG (Alpha 11 SoC is really good as well) are top notch. Sony pricing unfortunately renders it to marginal for me to buy as LG is the optimal one among them with PQ, 5 year panel warranty, supported codecs, screen brightness and deep discounts. Software-wise I dont like WebOS but can live with it. I would prefer Google TV but also external players such as Apple TV and Nvidia Shield are always reasonable options when compated with the prices we pay for high end TVs.

I own the Sony A95L as well...and I wasnt even putting that in the mix because its a whole other price range level and I bought it because of my expectations of its picture processing capability

I use external devices on my TV's..be it Apple Tv or a Roku

BUT...these Hisense Tv's will lose Wifi ( U8H) and flash the banner on the screen and then it will just reconnect and flash that banner on the screen

I have had E-Arc issues and HDMI CEC control issues, both of which can be inconsistent with the Hisense TV's
Its works and then it doesnt..no explanation ..So I completely agree with the rtings comment about occasional bugginess

Never an issue with the samsung Tv's

What's the deal with the open box ones - can you verify if they have dead pixels before you bring them home? That's gonna be a heck of a process getting that thing packed up and returned lol

I bought this tv for $3500 with $2000 in Best Buy gift card deal. I'm really happy with it. I downgraded from a Sony projector and size wise yeah it was a downgrade but black levels and colors are better.
