The point of this player is that it supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+ in Blu-Ray playback, which game consoles do not.

Here we go again, someone comparing dedicated video game console capable of dvd player vs stand alone dvd player with more tech stuff

To be fair it wasn't actually a comparison, more of an FYI, but yeah comes up every time. Next will be the guy that asks, "Who still watches Blu-rays?"

This is the gold standard of 4k UHD bluray players. Go into any of the communities dedicated to stuff like this, and you'll find this model referenced often.
My main dilemma I'm having is if I really want to commit to buying $20-$30 discs every time I want a high quality viewing. I have a high-end OLED Dolby Vision TV, but the cost of the player combined with discs really hurts.

Idk Nosferatu played fine on my UB-420, have no reason to suspect the 820 would have issues. Maybe you got unlucky
I also have both the 820 & 420 with zero issues with that disc.
It can often be a user/setup/disc caused issue.

It's very odd that this listing says "Blu Ray Player" when it's a 4K Bly Ray player. Those are two very different things. If you're paying $389 for something that plays Blu Rays but not 4K discs... you got fleeced.
Amazon has it listed correctly, only one that counts.

You have to keep in mind not all 4k UHD disc include DV and or high quality transfers.
If the BR transfer is good, this upscales really well, regularly producing a quality picture of its own.
Especially if you're going by a $20-$30 cost!

Don't forget the other half(better imo) of the movie watching experience… sound!
Some movies don't even offer an upgrade or is included on the BR disc also!

If cost is a factor I would suggest looking at the 420, only thing you give up is DV.

What is a 4k Bly Ray player? Some Chinese knock-off?

BLY's are the latest double-density Blu ray format. Look it up.

Thanks for sharing op. Looks to be a bit cheaper through B&H. $384.99 + FS

Looks like Amazon has price matched B&H.

I wonder if the price will drop anymore considering the tariff turmoil. I bought one 18 or so months ago for $348. Don't "need" another one at the moment, but will in the next year or so.

I have been watching this over the last few months at amazon and it has hit near this price a few times but waiting since I heard it hit $350 in the past. Used, like new which is at best an unblemished almost new return has hit about $335.

Where are finding used like new returns for $335? I'm seeing $373 on Amazon.

He didn't say that is the current price for Used - Like New. He stated that it had hit that low price some time in the past.

Maybe 2-3 weeks ago. Price changes by the hour.

Isn't this model more than 10-year old?

Nobody has a crystal ball, but personally I wouldn't wait. This is the lowest price it has been in the last 3 months, and even the lowest in last 1 year other than the brief period when it hit ~$350 last Thanksgiving. Indeed, as far as I can tell by CCC, it has hit the low price only twice, and during brief Thanksgiving sales. Given historic sales, there is a chance it'll go down again; but then it'll likely be next Thanksgiving and for a brief time. If that is going to be the case, one would have waited 7-8 months for ~$35. Also, with price of electronics going higher , there is no telling what'll happen. The XBox price went up by a $100, which is a popular 4K UhD player, and word is PS5 may follow suit as well. It's not unimaginable to think, price for the player will go up as well.

It's a luxury product anyway. This is a good enough price to bite. Of course, on the flip side, its price changes almost every other day. It hovers near this price often. So can't go too wrong in waiting either. Just don't expect that 'lowest ever' price too soon or too often.
