Maybe if anyone finds sites or vendors where it works, share that info here.

You need to save your discover card in Google wallet first. Then when putting in credit card info during checkout in Chrome where your Google account is signed in, you'll be able to choose to use virtual Discover card for the payment method and submit the order. The link in this post has instructions on how to do that.
Did you turn on Discover virtual card in Google wallet?
Yes. I did.
There should be virtual Discover card option right above the normal one, at least for me.

Will see what the Q3 categories are in a couple weeks but it's not looking good to combine with this promo...
I tested it out on my REI.com cart in the same Chrome browser. On the Payment page, I clicked on the empty field for Credit card #. Drop-down menu appeared with my Discover Virtual Card as well as regular Discover card. Selected Virtual Card, then it sends a verification text (to my GV #, apparently I have it set to that), enter the 6-digit code, and it auto-fills the Virtual card info. I didn't submit the order because I'm waiting to see what Discover 5% Q3 categories are, but if they aren't enticing, I'll wait until REI has a gift card bonus offer promotion (probably July 4), and buy a $200 REI GC then.
Update: Seems to work on online medical bill payments too! Since multiple purchases qualify as long as they total above $200, I'll probably go this route.
