A couple things about their website and this promo:

1) they reversed the order of the ticket options. basic (least expensive used to be on the right), it's now on the left. If you're used to just power scanning the right-most column for the lowest price, you'll need to check the left column now.

2) promo DOES NOT include basic fares - but they still show up in the results. Be careful with what you purchase so that it qualifies.
That's because that's a confirmation page to start your booking...that should not be linked here and the original poster should update it.

This is the proper link - https://www.southwest.com/loyalty...2-5DAW6IG4
Eff them
They've just jacked all their prices up again and even the points difference between basic and wanna get away plus is twice as expensive as it was just a couple months ago,, at least at the flights I've looked at.

Not sure what southwest is doing anymore. They took away a lot of perks and seems like loyalty declined. In addition to that, they seem to have kept or raised prices relative to their competitors. Im looking for flights to Orlando and Southwest is double what everyone else is asking.

Hold the line. Don't fly with them until they restore their old policies like no layoffs, free bags, and no credit expiration
The stock will continue its downward spiral, and eventually, someone will reverse merge it into Frontier or Spirit, taking on the name, which has slightly more goodwill than Frontier or Spirit.

Fly it or don't, you won't affect this from happening. They're never going back to Herb's airline. He's rolling in his grave at the moment.

Term #3&4. So basically if you buy the cheapest flight you don't get your pass and even if you do managed to get your pass, you would have to buy at least another time (non-basic flight) to travel btw September 8th and November 15 (before the holiday season). So you essentially have to book 4 trips w premium price to get 2 trips free. Definitely a Slickdeal for Southwest.

Not entirely true.

The FAQs state you just need to book "non basic" fares to EARN the pass .....then you can book basic to use it. It makes more sense this way as they then get the most $$ up front.

Q: If I book a reservation for travel between September 8-November 15, 2025, and purchase the Basic fare will I be able to add a Companion?
A: There is no fare product restriction on the use of your promotional Companion Pass. The fare product restriction that excludes Basic fares is for the qualifying flights you purchase to earn the promotional Companion Pass.

You're correct that they're not going back, at least in my opinion. That said, it's still an airline that offers decent value. Yes, we all hate it when our "entitlements" are taken away, but you have to look at the bigger picture. Southwest policies were extremely customer friendly. That sounds like a really good thing, but from a profit perspective, it's hard to compete against other airlines when you are offering so much more at lower prices. To your comment on stock price, it was getting crushed because of those benefits, not because of the change to the policy.

Yes, they removed free bags for everyone and made their prices more in line with competition. However, they still retain some of the benefits previously offered. No other airline is going to give you a flight credit for a basic ticket if you cancel as few as 10 minutes before the flight. They still refund 100% of the frequent flyer points no matter what ticket class purchased so long as you cancel it. Also, their frequent flyer flights, for fares under a certain dollar value, are still better than the rest of the industry. United, American, Delta, and others all may charge 12.5 to 15,000 points for a typical one-way that costs $100. On Southwest, the frequent flyer points are value-based, so the cheaper the flight the lower the points. In this case, you might get the Southwest flight for 7000 pts. To be sure, on higher ticket prices, the other airlines often provide better frequent flyer point conversion rates than Southwest. So your mileage may vary.

The changes due finally give Southwest credit card members some value other than the initial sign up bonus. Of course, this comes at the cost of removing benefits for others.

In all, it is certainly one large downgrade. However, if all you knew about Southwest is what they offer today versus other airlines, and had no idea about what they offered in the past, they would still seem like the best option out there.

Every time an airline changes their policies, there is uproar. However, people continue to fly. Delta's frequent flyer point requirements have gone through the roof over the past decade. But nobody complains about it anymore because the changes happened long ago. This too shall pass.

This is certainly true for various routes. But, is 100% YMMV. During their sales, Southwest drives down the price of competitors for certain routes. At other times, competitors might offer better pricing. I've also seen times where the same route I normally fly via United is somehow half price on American. Then, the next week, those two companies switched their prices and American is double the price of United. It's all part of the algorithmic game.

This was slick for me... Had a flight already booked through SW coming up in two weeks. Canceled and rebooked with points. I had to upgrade and it cost me 7000 more points than I originally booked for, but I'll make that up with the companion pass this fall. Now I'll try to squeeze in two trips this fall instead of one!

Wow... could have sworn them ending their 2 complimentary checked bags policy while also raising prices would have increased their bookings. How did this happen?
I recently saw a commercial for Southwest bragging about "now you can select your own seats!" Is that something to brag about... now, you can just pay for your seat selection, like all the other airlines do. Just another money grab... more leg room, aisle seat, front half of the plane... it'll cost you.

Don't want to pay extra? No problem, you and your family will be scattered randomly across the plane.

It reads like you arent able to book the companion until after 9/8 when you receive it and thus you have a limited window to redeem. With shorter booking dates being more expensive not sure how slick this truly is.

You can book your trip now and add the companion once that is added to your account on 9/8

Correct. The companion pass is one of the best benefits, but those points were highly devalued once COVID hit. Now they do these smaller windows of companion pass to where it only benefits you if you have trips planned for that short window where you can take advantage of this. If not, it's not for you.

My wife and I have used their companion pass offers 3 times to date. We look forward to them. But...now that basic fares are excluded, well, that kinda ruins the deal for us. It's monetarily worth it for us to pay an extra $150+ (price difference between basic and plus for 2 RT tix), but I don't much like the direction this is going. We may sit this offer out this time. higher price is good for their bottom line, in theory... good luck with that. that's what you get for having the bean counter running the business.

they used to run this deal regularly but you could earn it by purchasing WGA fares. now the lowest fare class is excluded. more enshittification. Can still have value if you can find a decent deal on WGA+ and plan to fly a couple times during the fall, but def less attractive than it used to be
