It's convenient for what it is, but I find I can pretty much buy a couple of Betty Crocker Flavored Mashed Potatoes, some store branded flavored instant oatmeal, and a couple of Knorr Flavored Rice packets for less than what this costs. Also, this kit may slow down some hunger pangs, but one should have some fats and proteins to round out these straight carb meals.

Read the label. Two-digit fat content per serving and a bit of protein in this.

I can still buy individual packets for cheaper with better variety. Any savings can then be applied to rounding out fats and proteins.

MRE's are hit or miss and even the hit is a bit of a miss but I still like them. It's not that I hate Mountain House but the prices are very high and the quality in not that great. Cheap grub that will last 25 years is money saved because it will probably never get used.

if you buy a box of food for storage it will probably never be used. Then again most households don't even have a few days worth of food stored for any emergency. The better way is to have a pantry that you eat out of. The grocery store stocks the pantry and the pantry stocks the kitchen. I could eat a long time on what is in my pantry and my deep freezer. Before you ask I have a generator and solar system ready to deploy to keep the deep freeze running. Even if I didn't a bag of beans, lentils, rice, beef bullion, some dried soup mic ( just from the grocery store not Augason farms) lasts quite a while and you can use them up over the course of time. Throw some extra beans in a pot of whatever, add rice to a dish here and there and over the course of a year you can use up a good amount of dried foods and buy more for next year so you always have good food you eat stored and dried food for emergencies. I am not prepared for the end of the world but I went through Hurricane Katrina and bought a generator. Then moved from Biloxi and where I live now this area got hit with a downburst a few years ago and we lost power for a couple weeks at my house. Some people lost power for a month so I am prepared a bit and it has paid off. As far as food goes I live a bit in the sticks ( for peace and quiet) and I don't want to do a 40 minute drive to the grocery store just because Iran out of Ketchup so I stock up the pantry out of convenience more than any other reason. The deep freezer lets me load up on meat that is on sale a day or 2 left on the sell by and freeze it or buy items in bulk for savings. It is amazing how convenient it is and I don't know why everyone doesn't have an old school pantry!

These are freeze dried and vacuum packed so they have a 25 year shelf life, the stuff you're buying will get stale way sooner. They're for long term storage in case of emergencies, not every day use.
