This doesn't tamper does it? I feel like that's necessary for surging on a machine like this

I'll just throw this in there, these machines are fine for convenience, but I would recommend getting something like a Breville Bambino Plus and a separate grinder like the Baratza Encore as an entry point to making espresso - both can be found on sale here decently often.

I got a like new a couple of months ago and had a bunch of issues with it not pumping properly and not heating very much. Glad I tested and just returned. Was like new.

You'd need the Encore ESP to grind fine enough for espresso. Also, Breville purchased Baratza grinders for their semi models like this one, so actually these work quite well despite being built in. You save money going this route rather than buying separately. I'd only consider separate if you are really picky and want to upgrade the grinder down the road.

You wouldn't need the ESP, it just provides more fine adjustability in grind size while nice would not be necessary for someone just wanting to make espresso at home. The built-in grinders are far worse than a standard encore in spread of grind size and reliability is tied to the machine if it's not separate.

Most folks disagree that the regular Encore is good enough for espresso. I'm not that picky so it's probably good enough for me, but YMMV: https://www.reddit.com/r/JamesHof...o_grinder/

I'm not sure that the built-ins are worse. The burrs are the same and because the built-ins won't be used to make anything other than espresso, the spread isn't as big of a deal since it's already dialed in for the espresso range.

The Barista Express is a tried and true design, so I'd Breville. You should watch the James Hoffman, and Tom's Coffee Corner reviews of the Ninja. It seems like both thought the Ninja was interesting. While impressed, I think they feel it tries to do too much overall, but both thought it makes legit shots with its unpressurized basket. The Ninja, unsurprisingly, has a quirky design and I personally don't care for the look of it, but that's subjective. None of the parts look like traditional espresso gear, and there's no 3rd party accessories (yet). The Breville is more old school and a little more hands on, and I prefer that. The one big negative I saw with the Ninja was that it has a pretty small water tank at 37 oz, that and there's no way to get hot water from it for making an Americano. They should have included a hot water button and used the steam spout, but they didn't.

If you do go for this deal, I would only buy the "like new". If they don't have any in that condition, it's not worth the risk.

Be careful. Breville doesn't offer warranty on used machines. Even when from Amazon. Return in 30 days or get a separate warranty.

Took advantage of this on the Touch Impress and unfortunately it arrived incredibly damaged with a ton of parts missing. Definitely recommend passing on these deals in the future.
