Tldr; good model at good price but note manual defrost

Man, the number of times I get excited by this deal and then see that it's (still) a manual defrost model is insane.

It's a good deal for this size of an upright freezer, and the mechanical clone model with retro styling that I got from Walmart delivered for this price is still working as intended ~4.5 years later. Just after experiencing it as my first upright, while I would still argue very aggressively towards manual defrosts on chest freezers (for LONG term storage measured in years) because of the design of an upright freezer replacing almost all of the cold/dry air with warm moist house air whenever it is opened combined with a manual defrost requires (VERY) regular scraping of the coils or a semi annual full defrost.

Edit: note this is written for people who have multiple freezers and use their small upright as a daily access if you only have upright freezers or only one freezer you do not want auto defrost as it lowers the lifespan of frozen foods. If you want to keep your food for the longest possible time opt for a chest with manual defrost provided you have the floorspace

Any good deals on upright garage ready freezer that does not require manual defrost?

I've not seen one in this size (or even larger recently.) There was a deal on a Maytag 20 cubic foot one for about 500 a handful of years ago at costco (or another box store?) if it or another big one like that ever comes back I will probably buy it but for now my alert keeps showing me this one... A smarter person than myself would add frost-free to their deal alert but I remain hopeful a good deal on one is just around the corner 😂

Contrary opinion: automatic defrost works by heating up the insides, and the resulting melt-freeze cycles will quickly cause freezer burn on anything near the walls.

If you're just storing frozen dinners, you won't notice so much, because they're in boxes and the box provides a bit of insulation. If you're storing meat and fish, you definitely want a manual defrost freezer like this one!

How much frost you accumulate mostly depends on how often you open your freezer, and somewhat on ambient temperature. I open my freezer twice a week, on average, and I've gone nearly two years between manual defrosts. If you open your freezer multiple times a day, especially in a hot climate, expect to defrost a lot more often.

I bought this 2 years ago during a similar sale and have been very happy with it.

Yes, it has manual defrost, but it only costs $198. I don't see the issue. I actually prefer manual defrost for an upright, personally.

These models look nice and you can get to things easier, but I use the top of my chest freezer as a food prep surface so idk if I might end up regretting upgrading to one of these 😭

the biggest reason to never get an upright is they are, stupidly, almost always auto defrost which means they don't store long or near as well.

Sorry I should have put the warning that I was speaking as someone / to people who have multiple levels of freezers if you only have one freezer you do not want to get auto defrost unless you're repacking all of your meat to deal with the dry air recirculating and warmed up coils - you instead want to scrape / defrost as needed.
In my world deep freezes (chests which are cheaper to buy and run plus generally have a longer service life) are for long-term storage / meat storage (which can be measured in years) under a constant -10F or lower and feature only manual defrost, upright units are for daily access at -5 to -10 where food isn't stored for more than a couple of months, and the freezer in the fridge is for food that is ok at 0F (or depending on fridge, in the teens) stored only for a couple of weeks.
You offer solid advice to those with only uprights or a single freezer 💜

Been thinking for weeks to get this, but reviews of units puking within 6 months are scary.

Honestly if that is your concern (item dying before usual lifespan) pay the extra $34 for the 4 year warranty, the Walmart extended warranties on fridges is excellent though if they break you are still responsible for disposal of the unit but you get your money back (in this case 85% of it).
