all of the cruise carriers have now started putting in the contract that these are not allowed on board and will be confiscated if found in luggage.

There are esim that works with cruise ships depend on destinations. The one I know worked is gigsky. Check their cruise ship plans. https://www.gigsky.com/data-cruises-cruises-only

Cruise ships are banning these to protect their revenue stream. You won't have to wonder if you just check the prohibited list in the FAQ of the cruise line you are intending to use.

too bad the rates are $50 a month or more
There's a "Standby" mode. With $5 a month, you get unlimited 0.5 Mbps, allowing you to text, navigate with Google maps, do facetime audio, do music streaming, and watch 480P videos (IIRC). You cannot stay in Standby mode for more than 12 consecutive months though, you either upgrade your plan, or you get limited to only accessing Starlink account page.

I bought last month, but was just outside of both my return and price match window at Best Buy. Frown

Oh well.
Have you tried your credit card? That may include a price match for an extended period of time. Good luck!

Right, Gigsky is good, I used it this August on a cruise ship to Canada. It worked well at sea and in Canadian cities. It cost me $30 for just 1GB data, not cheap, but for my minor usage, it's much better than the more expensive cruise WIFI.
I did some research before the trip, it looked to me Gigsky was the only mobile provider at sea.

Isn't it the same price from starlink directly, but you can use a code to get 1 month service free?

I would also like to know if you can activate the device straight to the 5 dollar standby service or if you need at least one month on their 50 dollar plan ?

In for one. Thanks for the post! I purchased the larger Gen 3 kit and placed it in my house. Initially wanting to tote that around, but circumstances didn't allow it. With this, I can put it in my backpack or vehicle and get going reliably. $5 bucks a month for maintenance mode is an absolute no-brainer for me. Especially if we can text and call from anywhere in the US.
This is what I was looking for so I can purchase this kit and just pay $5 a month in order to keep it active and what is the cheapest plan

i wonder how much Starlink will be enforcing the 12-month thing. to be quite honest, i only got the starlink mini for emergency situations when the cell towers go down and would be just fine with 500kbps for necessity functions and that's it. $5/mo for that peace of mine being able to just fire it up whenever would be great.

Within that section in the FAQ, it does say "constant, maritime, or high-bandwidth use", so I'd suspect that the reason they have this statement is to protect against people who use this as their primary internet option because it's honestly enough for some people.

I'd suspect if you really only are pulling down data a few days a month, they'll probably let you stay on it. Though I guess we won't know for sure for about a year.

FYI those who purchased at Home Depot and are outside of 30 day price adjust: Their refund policy on the Starlink is 90 days, so return & rebuy does work if you aren't able to get an adjustment.

Edit: For anyone who is going this route: Return and rebuy doesn't require you bring in the hardware at all, just a receipt.

I purchased on October 4 in-store and was outside of 30 days, so I (as nicely as I could) asked customer service if we could try a price adjust first, and do a return+rebuy if not. My clerk was kind about saying price adjust wouldn't be allowed, but that a return+rebuy was easy. Clerk did not hesitate to take care of it all in a few minutes time. (All while commenting out loud that it made no sense given that 90 day return was allowed).

Ah, my bad, as someone pointed out there's no fee (they don't ask address) if you try to sign up for Roam, only the residential plan. I didn't realize they don't ask for an address as a predicate for getting Roam service.
That makes sense. I honestly don't remember if I input an address for my Roam plan. Good to hear!

I tried calling / online chat and HD wouldn't do price adjustment, took it to the store and returned it and ordered a new one. Totally forgot you could actually return and rebuy the same unit.

Glad you got something to work anyway =) Mine was activated so I'd rather have kept the same one (and not have to pay for another first month of service before moving to standby).

I hear you. Well, it's still kinda new (came out in August IIRC), no one knows what will happen right now.
