This is the watch to get if you're a runner. It's very light and has full AMOLED navigation for trail running. The newer 970 is still too expensive; wait for the price to drop.

Forerunner 9 series packs pretty much same hardware from high end fenix/epix lines but in a lighter body. sapphire screen and LED flashlight were only highly sought out hardware parts in forerunner series which Garmin offered in 970 and in my opinion are not sports thingy at all. Having said that, In your case, either 965 or your current watch would not get any new features with software updates, Garmin will mostly do bug fixes in updates.My experience with Garmin is that you buy Garmin watches for what they've got in them already when released, not for what they will get in the future.If you are going to start doing running, switching from epix to forerunner may encourage you more as a forerunner again. I hope this helps!
