I've talked to them about it, and they say that's a fit issue, but I don't think I've ever had a shoe with zero movement back there.... If I look at my other shoes (such as Adidas terrex, asolo, Salomon, keen, etc) they all have more robust (tighter weave, thicker) fabric around the heel cup. Might be a me issue, but it never used to be a problem with Merrells for me. I have three pairs now that require armoring around the heel for longevity, but this has exposed to other issues with two of the pairs as they have worn.
