The TX RZ30 is a strong value 9 channel AVR for Atmos setups, especially if you want Dirac room correction and dual independent sub outs. It is repeatedly framed as a better fit than pricier Denon and Yamaha alternatives when you do not need more than 9 channels, and the included calibration is praised for improving sound after setup. The main cautions are extra Dirac costs for Bass Control, a learning curve, and recurring concern about Onkyo HDMI reliability and shipping or warranty hassles. A solid pick for a modern 5.1.4 or 5.2.4 system if those tradeoffs fit.
Common Questions (5)
The RZ30 includes Dirac Live for speaker correction, but DLBC is not included and costs extra. DLBC is the add-on used for subwoofer/bass correction and is often described as the main reason to upgrade if you use one or more subs.
Yes. It can process 9 channels, so it fits setups like 5.1.4 or 5.2.4, but it is not the right choice if you need more than 9 amplified channels.
Yes, it has two independent sub outs, which is a major selling point for people running multiple subs. That feature is also cited as a reason it compares favorably to the RZ50 for bass integration.
If your current AVR already meets your channel needs, the audible jump may be small; the main reasons to upgrade are Dirac room correction, newer features, and better subwoofer integration. For many setups, the receiver change matters less than speaker placement, room treatment, and sub calibration.
Not always. One checkout path added a $66 shipping charge when PayPal was used, but switching to a credit card removed the shipping fee.

Power consumption is specified as 760W, with 50W idle consumption and <2W in standby mode. If we generously assume 65% efficiency for the class-AB amps, that gives us a rough estimate of around 55Wpc with all nine channels driven at once, which is beefy for an AVR at this price.
The 170W is very very misleading (only at 6ohms load 1 channel driven, how is this a useful metric other than ohhh 170W high number!?)

Many will point out this offers Dirac Live for your loudspeakers & access to Dirac Live Bass Control($300).
The 1700 has access to A1Evo Express which basically gives you the equivalent of both DL & DLBC at no cost.
Here is a comparison

This is extremely tempting I just have absolutely zero interest in reading up on these things to see what's "worth it."
Judging by these comments, this seems like a pretty unbeatable deal, so thank you all for the feedback. I'll probably buy this and then just store it for a year until after my move and then I'll figure out speakers and crap.
Other than the extra channels, that's it.
If you don't need more than 9 channels(I agree most don't) and after Dirac , this is best unit to get especially for this price ime.
The new models adding access to ART will come with a hefty cost/MSRP.
Then you still need to pay an extra $600 to get it!
As great as ART is(own it) not many people will get the worth out of the high cost ime.
Just look at this past BF Dirac sale.
Denon/Marantz owners could have gotten it for $560.
Very few people bought it.
Most don't even find DLBC worth the cost imo.
If you use a sub(s), DLBC will suffice for most people ime.
A lot can change in that time and TBH you should get speakers 1st, they have thee biggest impact on sound quality.
There is a lot of learning to make it worthwhile especially if you plan on object based soundtracks(ie Atmos/DTS:X).
Start by checking to see what layout would work here & start with your base layer(ie 5.1).

I would suggest trying it without it & if you're content then I wouldn't bother.
At the very least, you can wait until BF when Dirac holds their yearly sale.
If you're gonna go with a Dirac unit you better make sure it has access to ART!
The ironic and confusing part is shaddai has the 3800 and doesn't find DLBC a benefit let alone ART!
He even has access to A1 Evo but questions its performance!!
Odd since people rave about it in the same place they rave about ART!
Now that's confusing!
Somehow me pointing these options out is somehow confusing and or a bad thing!
