I bought one a few weeks ago at this price. We have two other Zenbooks in the family, which have been excellent. Really nice OLED screen that was a big selling point for me, though I have no need for the touch functions. Other big draws were the light weight and slim profile, relatively large battery, aluminum body, and large enough screen for my aging eyes.

I almost didn't get this one because I punch in a lot of numbers once or twice a week for work and there's no number pad, but I gave in and bought a $20 bluetooth add-on, and I'm satisfied with that solution. The XL touchpad is responsive and has a few tricks up its sleeve. Beware if you need a lot of storage there is no second NVME slot, although that's true of most non gaming-oriented laptops these days, and prices for bigger drives have skyrocketed in the last year or so (thanks AI data centers, GRRR).

Everything works, the white keyboard backlight actually works particularly well with the white/silver keyboard, which I was skeptical of. I'm running Pop OS linux mainly and everything is working well, as it does with Windows. Haven't played any games yet. Speakers are decent for a laptop and get loud. It's not a $3000 gaming laptop or Macbook Pro but this is a nice overall package for a grand.

specs seem pretty good for $1k, a little sad we can't get 32gb ram these days at this price, but 24 is better than 16.

How do you compare Asus customer service? I called twice in last two weeks, and both agents tone were completely angry. I suspect they were not from US.

Does anyone know the actual memory configuration in this? I'm guessing soldered but trying to confirm. Edit: forgot ddr5 is dual channel in stick.
To answer my own question, the ram is soldered.

I previously posted the frontpage deal for the 32GB ASUS Vivobook S 16. I ended up really disliking the ASUS laptop for several reasons, and I ended up switching to the HP OmniBook 5 16" 2K Touchscreen Laptop currently being sold at Costco for $1,049.

Things I disliked about the ASUS that this HP addresses...
  1. Glossy Screen - The glossy screen on the ASUS was unbearable for me. I bought an anti-glare screen protector, but the clarity/resolution of the screen was really diminished and defeated the purpose of having a nice OLED screen. This HP has an anti-glare screen which is much better for me, and it's also touchscreen which is nice.
  2. Numeric Keypad - The ASUS doesn't have a numeric keypad which I frequently use.
  3. Keyboard - The HP soft grey keypad has a MUCH better contrast compared to the ASUS. I can easily read the letters.

I picked this up open box and moved from a zenbook 14 um3406.
I really like it. A lot.
My biggest complaint was its ability to get heat soaked and pretty warm. The thin profile means it doesnt have a great cooling setup.
I then got g helper, and found this chip undervolts pretty significantly, and it makes a big difference. Then setting power limits to 18w for daily tasks, or 28w for power intensive workloads really changed the thermals but still kept great performance.
The igpu is still competitive, but it would have been nice to have the full 890m and the 370.
The speakers sound great for a laptop of this size and thinness. I am not sure how someone could claim to be an audiophile and use laptop speakers, but i have seen weirder things.
All LPDDR is soldered. Soldered memory is faster and lower power. Its not a bad thing, just a tradeoff.
Wifi is decent but also soldered.
Ssd is a decent Samsung drive. Easy to swap too. I put in a 2tb.
The open box price was a incredible deal. At 1k, its a fair price I think.

Got mine open box for $583 ($423 after using $160 in rewards) at BestBuy and was MINT. Very happy. Curious, you mention using G-Helper, but the ASUS app also offers 4 performance level settings. Did you try using the ASUS app to run cooler? If so, what is the difference between the two? To be honest, I don't really have an issue with heat for what I do, but am always interested in options.

One negative thing to note regarding buying open-box ASUS from BestBuy is the warranty. ASUS does not give you 1 YR warranty on open-box. They somehow know when first sold and you get whatever is left-over, which can be just a few months. Since BB has a 15 day return period, I wonder how an open-box laptop can be 9 months old? In any case, you do have a 1YR from BestBuy, but if there is no ASUS warranty left, you have to pay BestBuy a service fee, based on the original price, should you need service. Sort of scummy if you ask me. BestBuy is probably one of ASUS's largest retailers yet treat BB customers with little respect with regards to warranty.

"DDR5" doesn't necessarily denote soldered or SODIMM, but LPDDR5 definitely is always soldered.

I haven't bought a HDD in years and don't intend to, too spoiled, and most of what I use now has no internal HDD bay. I think even DDR4 is beginning to creep up again, unfortunately, as people and some manufacturers turn back to it due to the outrageous price of DDR5. Strange times.

i got this a few months ago open box fair about $750. no blemish I could find and it's perfectly gorgeous. the speaker is not downfiring so it sounds excellent i dont even bother plugging in my headphones for watching. i have to keep turning the display to 120Hz in the display setting but i guess that's a windows bug.

I think they used the audiophile word loosely. I know a thing or two about good audio quality and while I agree with your argument, one of the reasons I go with MacBook Pro over most other laptop grade computers is that in that form factor, it gives me a more than satisfactory audio quality that no other machine has been able to. On the other hand my spouse wouldn't care about it at all! Of course, one can't expect hifi audio from tiny laptop speakers. But what MacBook Pros have done with their speakers feels truly satisfying to me, again, for that form factor, and hence I have grown to dislike most others.

First time I've seen something day 880m graphics card. I wonder how good or average it is.
The notebook check review recommends only older games on reduced settings for this laptop.

While the 880m can be equivalent to 3050 in some cases, Asus uses a relatively low TDP of 28 watts PL1 and 33 watts PL2 which means restrictions in terms of maximum performance.
