Have one, it's fantastic. The pre filter always gets tons of dust and hair I vacuum up.

The NY Times Wirecutter has repeatedly rated this their best air purifier. Their testing is pretty rigorous so the results can be trusted. I lucked out and got an open box one on eBay for $49. It looked brand new. If you're looking for fancy displays, remote controls and Internet connectivity, this isn't it. It's pretty basic with just a few buttons. And instead of fancy digits telling you how many particles are in the air, you just get a 3 color light. The only thing slightly deluxe is an ionizer mode. Despite being no frills, it does what an air purifier is supposed to do and that's to clean the air. And it does it very well. With very little energy, I might add. I believe medium fan speed only uses 8 watts.

Anyway, if you're cheap, look on eBay. The older model may be listed quite often. The only difference between the old and present model is aesthetics. The performance and innards are identical.
