The M12 Fuel Hackzall is a compact reciprocating saw that fits trim work, pruning, and occasional DIY jobs well, especially when portability matters. It has enough power for tasks like cutting cast iron pipe, seized trailer bolts, metal closet rods, and long bolts, and the Fuel version is clearly stronger than the brushed M12. The main tradeoff is that it runs slower and less powerfully than the M18 Fuel or corded saws, which makes it less appealing for heavy demo work. The deal also only makes sense if the hack works, since pickup and return quirks can get in the way.
Common Questions (4)
The M12 FUEL Hackzall can handle common DIY cuts like seized trailer bolts, metal closet rods, long bolts, and even a cast iron pipe. It is slower and less powerful than the M18 Fuel or corded saws, but it works well for its intended use and is more portable.
The M18 Fuel Hackzall is stronger and faster, and several comments describe it as the better tool for heavy demo or trade work. The M12 version is more compact and can do similar tasks, but it cuts slower and has a fixed shoe instead of the M18's rotating shoe.
Yes, the deal is mainly attractive if you can successfully complete the hack, because that is what brings the price down. Without the hack, the value is much less compelling at this price.
The pickup hack may not work if the site will not allow two-store pickup, and returns can be problematic if the system requires all items back at once. It can also affect return history, so the workaround is not always reliable.

But the M12 can do everything the M18 can do, just slower. It's slightly more compact. The shoe is fixed vs. the M18's rotating one (which can be a good thing in some situations). You know what they say, comparison is the thief of joy.
As someone who's in the M12 system but no M18, I'm picking this up and returning the $170 bundle I got last week, thanks.
