The M12 Fuel Hackzall is a compact reciprocating saw that fits trim work, pruning, and occasional DIY jobs well, especially when portability matters. It has enough power for tasks like cutting cast iron pipe, seized trailer bolts, metal closet rods, and long bolts, and the Fuel version is clearly stronger than the brushed M12. The main tradeoff is that it runs slower and less powerfully than the M18 Fuel or corded saws, which makes it less appealing for heavy demo work. The deal also only makes sense if the hack works, since pickup and return quirks can get in the way.

  • The fixed shoe design can be useful for trimming and controlled cuts compared with the M18 rotating shoe.

  • The M12 Fuel Hackzall can handle practical metal cutting tasks like seized trailer bolts and closet rods.

  • The kit can be a good fit for occasional DIY work when portability matters more than maximum power.

  • The saw can knock out a tight one-cut job on cast iron pipe when the cut is set up correctly.

  • The M12 Fuel Hackzall can feel disappointing compared with the M18 Fuel Hackzall for demanding demo work.

  • The M12 Fuel version may cut slower than M18 Fuel and may not match corded or higher-power options.

  • The deal may be only worth it if the 'hack' works, since some buyers cannot complete pickup in two locations.

  • Returns and store pickup can be problematic, since the system may require all items returned and can affect return history.

Big mistake for $100 approximately you get a piece that are cut through anything anytime battery included when you really need a tool like this you wish you had it
maybe - but i'm unable to do the "hack" easily... it won't let me do pick-up in two locations. I know last few deals people said it was getting killed. I

I don't quite understand the hate for this being ONLY M12. I have the pruning saw (mini chain saw) and it's a freaking beast! I locked my Husky 455 into a slanted cut and used the M12 to slowly cut it out! Lol yeah, I know, I should have paid more attention when felling that part of the tree.

Anyway, if this is anything like the M12 saw, it should do just fine. I mean, I really want this and it sucks my YMMV didn't work for me...

I've done a lot of research on this tool, a lot of people hate it because of the M18 Fuel, which is a monster. Yes, if you are in the trades or do a lot of demo work, the M18 is clearly the way to go.But the M12 can do everything the M18 can do, just slower. It's slightly more compact. The shoe is fixed vs. the M18's rotating one (which can be a good thing in some situations). You know what they say, comparison is the thief of joy.As someone who's in the M12 system but no M18, I'm picking this up and returning the $170 bundle I got last week, thanks.
Yeah just had to cut a cast iron pipe...one cut but tight and this saw knocked it out quick. The price is right and you will find a use for it

I got this as an extra part of a combo years ago and I got my moneys worth out of it. My brother-in-law has the m18 hackzall, it's performs significantly better. Even my dad's old dewalt 20v sawzall with the old phallic battery got thru our cuts twice as fast and lasted slight longer.

Oh yes it's only really worth it if you could hack it as well.

Hit the "View full product details" in the Home Depot link, that's what the OP said.

I use the M12 Fuel version regularly and love it.

Yes it isn't a beast like the M18 or a corded, but it works for what it is intended and works great!

I use this way more than I thought I would when I purchased it. I've cut off seized trailer bolts and metal closet rods for a custom closet, cut long bolts down to size and several other things that it was just the perfect tol for the job and made it really easy.

Does anyone else find irony in folks having trouble executing the hack for this HACKZALL? I guess it's a catch 22.

The brushed M12 is very weak
The M12 fuel is significantly more powerful
The M18 is bigger and stronger
On a scale of 1 to 10
If the M12 brushed were a 1, the M12 fuel would be a 7 and the M18 fuel a 10
