The Traeger Pro Series 22 comes across as a solid starter pellet smoker for set it and forget it cooking, with enough room for a brisket, pork shoulders, ribs, or a big batch of wings. The hopper is said to hold enough pellets for up to 36 hours, and the porcelain over cast iron grates are easier to clean than steel grates. It also has four meat probe ports and phone temperature notifications, but it does not monitor pellet levels or offer WiFi temperature control. It is best suited to smaller sessions unless another smoker handles the bigger cooks.
First-time pellet smokers wanting a set-and-forget cooker, because it handles brisket, pork shoulders, ribs, and wings with enough space for long sessions.
Pitmasters cooking long overnight smokes, because the hopper can hold enough pellets for up to 36 hours and phone notifications help track temperature.
This model does not have WiFi or app-based remote control, so you cannot change the temperature from your phone. It does still support temperature notifications and probe monitoring, and a separate Meater+ thermometer can add phone connectivity for monitoring.
It can handle a large cook for a small-to-medium group, including a huge brisket, a couple of big pork shoulders, a few racks of ribs, or a lot of wings. It is also described as a good starter smoker, but a larger model is better if you plan to cook multiple meats at once regularly.
It does not monitor pellet levels, but the hopper is said to hold enough pellets for up to 36 hours of smoking. That makes it practical for long cooks without needing to worry about running out mid-session.
It does not have a built-in sear function. If searing matters, you need another method or a newer Traeger model that reportedly added searing capability.
It is described as a strong first pellet smoker and a good choice if you want a set-it-and-forget-it setup or want to try pellets without going bigger. If it will be your main smoker for frequent large cooks, a larger model may be the better fit.
I used the larger model of this for years. Great smoker. Temp probe was close enough to my thermoworks. My only complaint is there is no way to sear on it. Not a biggie if you have another way. They fixed that with their newer models and added all the app functionality.
Is this good for a 1st pellet smoker? I'm well versed in smoking but this seem slick it would be easier then charcoal.
If you've already been smoking before, and just want to try pellet out - or want to "set it and forget," I'd say this will be a good starter. People claim that old Traegers last forever while some newer customers claim issues. I'm lucky enough not to have issues on my 3-4yr old one similar to this but larger and has wifi. The one I have is my first pellet smoker and before I use to (seldom) smoke with gas so I had an idea of the basics.
I'm glad I got the bigger one, though, as through the years I've had several occasions when my larger one was full. If you have another way to smoke for larger sessions, then get this one. If it will be your primary smoker, and there's a chance you'll be cooking 1 of each meat (brisket/pork/chicken/ribs) in one go, or 2+ of each, then I'd suggest a larger one.
