So, the real question here -- does this model suck or does this model suck?

It is actually not bad. I bought one for my wife, when she wants to get small areas, like the car. I got one for my son (electrician) to clean up after himself. Sad to have to still tell him to clean up after himself. At this price, it is a good deal. Normally, they are on sell for $99

It sucks without a prefilter. If you find a way to add a prefilter then it does suck.

I use this one the most of the 3 DeWalt vacuums I have. Almost to the point I want to sell the others. All the attachments make it especially great.

As for a pre-filter to make the filter last longer, Amazon sells what amounts to oversized thin nylon socks that you can stretch over the filter. Definitely extends the life of the filter and worth the couple bucks for the 10-pack they usually come in. I've been using the same filter since I bought this around 2020 and still works like new.

Slickdeals might have messed up the link. Google "thingiverse Prefilter for Dewalt DCV501HB"

The best cordless vac I've used (haven't used the $500+ Dysons) and bought one for $99 a few weeks ago. Just bought another at this price of $89!

Do you have a link to the nylon socks? I don't have a 3d printer for the thing iverse schematic to which agate alluded

Bought it a couple weeks ago for $99. The suction is very good with the narrow attachment, but weaker with the big brush attachment. I've vacuumed my cars a couple times—no regrets. Fyi, the Ridgid shop vac attachments will fit this Dewalt.

Idk what cordless vacs you have used but this is just a glorified dust buster lol, it is perfect for what it is though, I have used this thing hard for 6 years and it just keeps going. You are going to want a pre filter and 4+ ah battery for this

I just got it for $99. It's ok but the small intake tube and hard angle makes things like longer wood splinters or leafs jam. I ripped out a small plastic flapper to help slightly. The paper filters clog fast but they sell 4 filters with 8foam prefilters for $16 on amazon and they say this and those are washable but don't use pressurized air or it makes tiny holes that let dirt into the motor ruining it. For me I would give it a 3.5stars mostly because of clogging too easy on what I want to vacuum.
