I have a version of these that hits 16 inches, but I regret not getting IKEA Skadis style pegboard since the 3d printing world basically standardized on it.

If the panels are 12x12, why not just put a 1x2 nailer to span the studs and you are good to go! You can screw the panels anywhere along the 1x2.
Ugly, less stable, lower weight capacity, and just why.
Why buy something with a known limitation, causing you to need to buy something else, and then do more work, just to work around that limitation? Particularly when the cost savings are low. I just don't understand your thinking.
