You make it sound like this Garmin unit does all that stuff... it doesn't.

You do know that the recent iPhones with satellite connectivity provides text messaging, SOS signal and location sharing, similar to this Garmin, without a cell network. I'm not saying that one should not buy this Garmin, because there's a target audience out there for sure. Just pointing out that your statement is based on cellular and/or WiFi connectivity (or lack thereof) of an iPhone.

A recent update made it possible to use SOS while your device subscription is suspended. You can do the $8/mo Enabled plan, then suspend for 12 months after which it'll go back to Enabled. I believe REI stopped selling this model so before too long, it'll just be the more expensive Mini 3's as an option.

My pixel phone also will do the emergency satellite texting. For an extended backcountry trip I would probably consider a dedicated satellite phone, but that is not my use case presently.

My daughter is at a girls camp in the heart of the Rockies. Zero cell service, yet I was texting her this afternoon. She has an iPhone and, fun fact, it'll text through satellites when there's no cell service.Only negative is that occasionally you have to wait for the satellite to come into range. The phone literally tells you how long it takes to come into range.

These types of devices are a thing of the past. Your iPhone or android phone can do pretty much everything this device can.
