i didnt read them all,but out of the first few i see no true texans. there are no ya'll,s, over yonders or youonto's. i am a by god texan an we not only deserve our own thread, we deserve our own web-site http://www.state.tx.us/

and you should know how to speak or at least understand texan. her is yor guide: Texas Slang Translation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

George W. Bush will be bringing with him many friends from Texas, and for anyone not born in the Lone Star State, the Texan accent and the cowboy colloquialisms can seem a bit strange. Here is a guide to a few of the more colorful expressions they might encounter:

The engine's runnin' but ain't nobody driving
Not overly-intelligent

As welcome as a skunk at a lawn party
(self-explanatory)

Tighter than bark on a tree
Not very generous

Big hat, no cattle
All talk and no action

We've howdied but we ain't shook yet
We've made a brief acquaintance, but not been formally introduced

He thinks the sun come up just to hear him crow
He has a pretty high opinion of himself

She's got tongue enough for 10 rows of teeth
That woman can talk

It's so dry the trees are bribin' the dogs
We really could use a little rain around here

Just because a chicken has wings doesn't mean it can fly
Appearances can be deceptive.

This ain't my first rodeo
I've been around awhile

He looks like the dog's been keepin' him under the porch
Not the most handsome of men

They ate supper before they said grace
Living in sin

Time to paint your butt white and run with the antelope
Stop arguing and do as you're told

As full of wind as a corn-eating horse
Rather prone to boasting

You can put your boots in the oven, but that don't make em biscuits
You can say whatever you want about something, but that doesn't change what it is

That's a fur piece.
It'll take you awhile to get there

Don't worry 'bout the mule son, just load the wagon
just do your part and I'll do mine

Don't call him a cowboy, till you've seen him ride
Don't judge a book by its cover

She's been rode hard and put away wet
refers to an unnattractive, hard-looking woman

toad choker
a heavy rain

frog strangler
also a heavy rain

finer than frog hair
use anywhere you might use the word "fine"

rarer than hen's teeth
pretty darn rare

tump
to spill, as in "I jes' tumped over mah beer"

coke
Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, Mountain Dew, Big Red, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some Texas Wisdom
Never slap a man who's chewin' tobacco.
Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back in.
If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there.
If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.
Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.
There's two theories to arguin' with a woman. Neither one works.
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.
Don't squat with your spurs on.
It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Never miss a good chance to shut up.
There are 3 kinds of people: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest of them who have to touch the fire to see for themselves if it's really hot.

laugh out loud Isn't that what upstate New Yorkers tell people when they complain about the winters? Stick Out Tongue

I'm approaching 3 years in TX. The summer of 2007 rocked, but the others stunk. Weak I may be, but I'm down going down that easily! Whee

wave It doesn't normally get that hot near the coast here. The weather had been all over the place lately. Must have been much worse inland. I was actually relieved to see it was 95 though, because I thought it was in the 70's and didn't understand why it felt so hot. laugh out loud
wave I thought San Diego (at least the coastal part) hardly ever even hits 90 deg., so thatm must've been very unusual weather. Maybe it's global warming. Whee j/k Stick Out Tongue

Big skies
Oak trees
BBQ
Mexican food
Mockingbirds singing
Mourning doves cooing in the morning
Quail calling to each other
Scissortails cartwheeling in the sky
Austin and the hill country
People saying y'all
Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrushes and other Texas flowers
Good steaks

(disclaimer: I'm still glad we moved, the weather here is better/healthier but I do miss Texas)

There's a different brand of hellish allergies where ever you go. I went to visit my sister in Los Angeles last summer and was miserable. The only place I'm OK is where I grew up, and there is zero chance that we'll end up back there.

Allergies are everywhere. I had them bad in NJ and my sister now has them bad in AZ - 4 years after she moved there. In TX, I'm starting to get more allergies now than when I moved here a few years ago, but still not as bad (yet?) as when I lived in NJ. I guess once the body gets used to the new environment, it gets more affected by the allergies. Frown

Something is blooming here right now that's really giving me trouble, even with the flonase. I woke up at 2:30 and had to shut the windows as I was so stuffed up. Not good when you don't have AC. Might have to get a portable AC unit as the windows are too small for a window unit. Annoyed

Flonase did a great job on my allergies in Texas. You both should as your doctor about it. Since it's a low dose nasal steroid, it does take time to build up in your system so if you try it, stick with it for 4 to 6 weeks. After that, I never had problems again.

Since this is a Texas specific freebie, I figured it would be better to post it here. Instead of in the loungers deals thread.

Hello fellow texans. Didn't know this thread existed. There should be fireworks, cattle prods, or something announcing it.

Born and raised here. Recently moved from near Amarillo to the North DFW area. It's like a whole 'nother country here!

fingers crossed after massive days of + 100 heat drought conditions there is a 20 percent chance of rain (houston) and it goes up to 40 percent Monday Tuesday Wed . We just might break our drought and water restrictions!!!!
I had a hard time yesterday dealing with the heat as well . Was looking at the weather channel to see who had normal tempretures and rain.....

I sure hope so - it's dangerously dry here. I'm surprised we had fireworks yesterday.
