I own one of these. I've owned 5 receivers in my life and this one is the worst. Do not buy. The receiver will not sync audio AT ALL when the chain is source --> Receiver --> TV. The ONLY way to get it to sync audio is by using eARC which entirely defeats the purpose of having multiple inputs. Their customer service department I e-mailed even admitted this is a known problem and they don't know if it will ever be fixed via firmware. Dirac is fine but I prefer audyssey since dirac has no audio compression tools whatsoever. If you're listening to a movie or show that has poor audio post production then there is no way to fix it with compression, you're just screwed. Also the receiver has a really stupid power saving feature that makes loud clicks to go into full power mode every time you go louder than -22dB relative. Lastly, the component video input is fake and does not support HD resolutions so I don't even know why they put it on the unit. Denon did the same thing with their fake component input but they are both the same corporation so that makes sense.

I have an entirely different set of issues. The front display on mine went dead about 6 months into ownership. I've got to drive it about 1.5 hours to drop it off to their repair shop in Winston/Salem.

Real bummer coming from a 10 year old Yamaha workhorse. Just needed 4k, Dirac and all the stuff with the modern AV...

Going back, I'd probably grab a new Yamaha and not worry as much about Dirac, although it is very nice.

Thanks for this, I've been bopping between the Sony AN1000, Denon 2800h, and Yamaha whatever to replace an old Yamaha (which I ended up loving, but am giving it to my sister). I'd go for a Denon 3900h but I don't want to pay retail pricing.

Reviews are weird on this one as some absolutely gush over it, but I had issues with Onkyo with the prior ownership.

I may have bitten on this without this and the replied comment, so much appreciated for taking the time to relate your experience here.

I will add:
I setup up one of these and know another that owns it.
They both use a 4k player & Apple 4k.
It's been about 5 & 10 months with zero issues.

It's said to have this "limp mode" issue the other 2021 PAC units has.

I've had experience with pretty much all of them and never "heard" the issue.
You can go back and read all the PAC post on AVS and you won't find anyone else that "heard" it either.

Every brand has a failure rate so you need to read all those post with a grain of salt imo.

Meh, if Amir's usual theatrics had any real-world relevance, you'd see folks returning this AVR en masse after their RZ30s went into "limp mode" in the middle of a viewing session, which would be reflected in user feedback in vendor site reviews as well as Reddit and audio forums like AVS. That has never happened. Which strongly suggests that, like almost all of Amir's electronics measurements (his speaker measurements are a bit more useful) it's mainly ACADEMIC---it would be a problem only IF you were a confirmed volume freak and were pushing your speakers to extremely loud volumes, while NOT crossing them over to a powered subwoofer which massively reduces the power burden on the AVR.

for a low end theater this onkyo is pretty good in my opinion, I dont know all that stuff in the article but I do own the rz30 in a small bedroom, I went to the rz30 from a yamaha tsr700 because i wanted 9 channels instead of the yamahas 7, and havent really had any complaints, but then again i dont push my receivers hard being that its a small/medium bedroom. As for the audio lag, I do experience it with my bluray player but it can be rectified by using the audio delay option built into the receiver, and also my bluray player has it built into the player but i choose to use the receivers option. it lets you choose how many milliseconds of time needed to fix the sync, its better than my yamaha because the yamaha only gave 2 settings i think for lag, whereas the onkyo lets you choose down to the millisecond.

Why would you just not ship it to the repair shop?
You could probably convince them to pay for the shipping there since its a warranty repair

Denon/Marantz has certainly paid for my unit to be shipped to them for repair..prior to them outright replacing the entire unit under warranty

Onkyo RZ50 failed..Denon X3800 failed
The Denon X4800 barely passed and he had a few less than stellar comments about its performance

I've had my RZ30 for about a year or so now, and it's fantastic. It handles my AppleTV that's attached to it flawlessly, and Plex in 720/1080/4k is perfect.

I've never had any of the issues described in this thread. I cross-shopped the Denon X3800H and am so happy I went with this for $1000+ less $$.

Amir's reviews are interesting for a test lab; for real world use I think it's completely useless.

It's science.

Not feelings.

You can see if the unit can provide the wattage promised.

You can see if the unit's distortion and dither are within the manufacture's specs.

It's just like when people say that Williston Audio Labs is too picky. Don't say that your amp can provide 4000w at .1% THD (unless it really can). Otherwise you get called out.
