The Onkyo TX NR7100 is a 9 channel AV receiver that stands out mainly for Dirac Live at $599, making it one of the cheapest ways to get Dirac in an AVR. It is also praised for solid everyday performance, easy setup, and long term reliability, with reports of years of use and no overheating when ventilation is adequate. The main drawbacks are the lack of pre outs, parallel sub outs, and only basic AccuEQ if Dirac is not used. It also may not be the best match for demanding 3 to 4 ohm speakers at loud levels. A strong value pick if Dirac is the priority.

Common Questions (5)

  • No pre-outs are included on the TX-NR7100, and its two subwoofer outputs are parallel rather than independent. If you want pre-outs or more advanced bass management, the RZ30 is the step-up model.

  • If your current receiver already covers your needs, the main upgrades are Dirac Live, HDMI eARC, and HDMI 2.1 support. Older models like the NR676 or NR797 can still be fine for basic 5.2.2 or 2.1 setups.

  • Yes. Dirac Live is onboard at no extra charge at $599, making it one of the least expensive ways to get Dirac right now.

  • It can handle normal listening levels for many setups, but truly 3-4 ohm speakers across a wide range may be a challenge at louder volumes. For that kind of load, the RZ70 is the safer recommendation.

  • These units can run warm to hot, but overheating is mainly a ventilation problem rather than a normal operating issue. Proper airflow matters more than the model itself.

Experts - If I want 9.2, want to future proof, and DONT care about Dirac, is this the right unit and price?
This is 5+ years old 9 channel only with no preouts & parallel sub outs.

If you don't care for Dirac & unless you manual calibrate.
You will be stuck using AccuEQ which is pretty basic room correction ime.

Not sure what you consider future proofing but this might not be the best future proofing unit imo.

wow....93 upvotes in about 1 day!!

That speaks to the capability of this AVR along with the combination of price point fully meeting the expectations of slick deals

Not even sure if the Integra 3.4 got this many upvotes when it was available. That unit was the same price ,had pre outs and 5 year warranty

Ahh...I remember those days but at even cheaper prices with the instore extra 20% coupon

I live about 3-4 miles from an old Fry's location

I recall buying the Denon X4500 $679, X3500 $479 and the Pioneer LX701 $639

If I recall correctly..after a couple years of use I sold all of them and still made a profit on what I originally paid

Those were the days!
On the plus side, no longer need to pay 4xxx prices since the 3xxx series are so similar especially if you use external amps.

If you haven't looked into A1EVO, highly recommend you do.
With the popularity of Dirac, it's a game changer for units like yours!
Especially since you have XT32 & Sub EQ HT.
You can add Dirac performance & you don't lose subwoofer RC, for free!

Wow..now 116 upvotes!!

I dont think even the old Integra 3.4 deals were this popular

I dont even think I have seen an AVR thread with this many upvotes on slick deals before?

This speaks to the value/performance proposition of this unit in the eyes of slick deals I guess

Dirac onboard at no charge and manufacturer warranty to boot

I have not personally owned this unit

But if its the sonic equivalent of the Onkyo RZ50 I owned, I would personally pay the $250 difference over the Denon X2800 I bought a couple of weeks ago for $350 at Best Buy

That Denon X2800 is worth $350...but thats about all I would pay for it based on personally owning it

If Dirac is the main value.
I would pay an extra $100 for the RZ30 when it hits $700 again & it will(has several times)!

Having compared it to the RZ70, it gives you pretty much comparable sonic equivalent.
Especially in the eyes of slick deals!
It will comfortably power most of the popular/common speakers on SD, offers the same Dirac & features, best of all, for more than half the cost!
As a matter of fact, you add DLBC for $300($240 on BF), it's better sonic performance ime!

You will still have at least $500 left in your pocket!
Now that's a slick deal!

I see you on all the av threads. I've been eyeing the rz30, probably overkill for me but seems like it covers any sort of expansion I'd ever be interested in. Are you advising people to wait for a deal on that instead of this unit?

Is this better than the Integra DRX 3.4 that was on sale a year or two ago? I currently have the Integra and am completely underwhelmed by it.

If expansion & budget is a big priority, then yes.
The $100 buys you newer unit, pre outs, independent sub outs & most important/beneficial(imo) access to Dirac's subwoofer/bass correction/integration.

Sonically, no not really. The only real benefit is the pre outs ime.

Mine arriving in a few days. Can't wait. $599, plus another $100 off with C1S. Unbeatable for DIRAC.

Why does it rate 220W at 6ohm instead of at 8ohm normally? How to find the wattage of 8ohm pls?
