Pizza delivery guy didn't accept my tip. Was he trying to send a message?

278 20 December 29, 2010 at 07:52 PM in Chat
I was visiting San Francisco recently and ordered a pizza and salad from a local restaurant. The delivery guy was in his mid 40's. I only tried to tip him a dollar, but he just said no thanks. I said are you sure, and he declined the tip again. He was friendly and respectful about it. After he left, I started to think that I offered too small of a tip. The bill was around $20, and I just gave my normal Domino's tip. I was thinking maybe he was offended by such a small tip. I should have tipped him around $3. I've never had someone not take money from me. Is a dollar tip offensive to a delivery guy?

What's a mixer got to do with your ability to make pizza??? Dontknow I make my own dough from scratch by hand....no fancy mixer for me.
I have a gluten allergy and we have to make pizza dough from scratch with gluten free flour... we use one of those little hand mixer dealies with the two mixer attachments and a big bowl. Works pretty well.

I too was a pizza delivery guy for about a year right after High School. Not all pizza joints have a Delivery Charge. Yes the drivers get paid millage. But its not nearly worth it with gas being almost $4 a gallon. Plus the wear & tear on your car. So drivers rely on tips. They get paid better than waitresses but remember are beating their cars.

As a driver you are the one that gets yelled at if the pizza is late. And many times its not the drivers fault. Many times the waitresses / waiters would bump their orders in front of the delivery tickets. So by the time the pizza comes out its already late.

As a driver you do get some crazy requests &/ Or Tips. Smilie

I agree about the comment with the tip jars. Or when you pick up an order and theres a spot on there for tip. But drivers deserve to be tipped. And not just $1 you cheapskate.

If they advertise free delivery it's free and let the store pay whatever to delivery person.

I agree with the the delevereier who didn't take your tip. He's already on payroll.

Do you tip a bus driver? Or at a takeout counter?

Aren't you the one who wanted to give your landlord a $700 tip at the end of the year? Roll

Does the bus driver drive his personal bus? Or pay for the gas for the bus?

I guess I never understood the tipping for pizza delivery guys. I know servers get paid less than minimum wage and work off of tips. Pizza delivery guys are compensated for the mileage and get paid at least minimum wage. I used to deliver furniture when I was younger and never received tips. It is a lot harder to deliver a sofa sleeper than 3 or 4 lbs of food. He could have been the owner. It was just odd that someone would turn down money even if it was only a dollar. I guess I need to think about the tip before they knock on the door.

I agree.. I only tip my pizza guys a dollar.. and what ever change may be left from rounding up... They get minimum wage.. some more than that.. plus mileage... so I don't see it as the same as a waitress who doesn't even get half of minimum wage.

Adding fuel to the fire........

I order food from a steakhouse, for pick up, do I tip?

I waitressed years ago, our "hosts/hostess" got tipped out by servers (as did bussers and bartenders).

Side note:

I quit having the chineese place deliver, I guess they didn't like my 15% tips because the last time I ordered they left half my food at the restraunt. I called, they said it would be 2 hours before they would bring the rest. I went in an picked it up myself, asked for my delivery fee back ($2) they gave me back $1 because they delivered half the food...........yea...........

He probably got his tip by "seasoning" your pizza.

You don't think his nick name "jack off Jimmy" was a coincidence, do you?

Granted I haven't deliveried pizza for about 20+ years...

I would have returned the $1 tip. The way I figured it, if they tipped so little, then obviously they needed the money more then I did and giving back $1 wouldn't break the bank. So refuse the tip and note the house for future reference. (Not to do anything bad, we were just sent on 3-4 deliveries at a time, and the bad tippers would be the last ones we delivered even if they were closer)

As for how much we made, it was minimum wage + 0.75 cents per delivery. We were considered "independent contractors", so we had to pay for the car, the gas, the insurance (which was a lot more since it was for business), self employment taxes and the full share for social security.. ugg.

LOL, So true.

~20 years ago, some of the good tippers would ask us to pick them up some milk or cigs (we were next door to a convience store). It's amazing what kinda of perks you can get when your well known.

Can you please explain to me why it's my responsibility to make sure the pizza delivery guy makes a better salary? You want more money, ask your boss for a raise or get a different job that pays more. If you don't feel you're being paid enough, that's your boss' problem, not mine.

Right, ultimately setting your pizza up for a waterfall of spit. Good thinking, mate. hug
