Pizza delivery guy didn't accept my tip. Was he trying to send a message?

278 20 December 29, 2010 at 07:52 PM in Chat
I was visiting San Francisco recently and ordered a pizza and salad from a local restaurant. The delivery guy was in his mid 40's. I only tried to tip him a dollar, but he just said no thanks. I said are you sure, and he declined the tip again. He was friendly and respectful about it. After he left, I started to think that I offered too small of a tip. The bill was around $20, and I just gave my normal Domino's tip. I was thinking maybe he was offended by such a small tip. I should have tipped him around $3. I've never had someone not take money from me. Is a dollar tip offensive to a delivery guy?

If you dont want to give the driver a tip, no one is putting a gun to your head. Thats your choice if you want to be a cheap ****. I will guarentee they will remember you in the future, that's for sure. But again, you could always take your fat *ss over there & go pick it up if you rather not tip a driver.
Actually I usually do pick up my food on the way home because it's faster, not because I don't want to tip a driver.

But you are living in a fantasy world if you think drivers deserve a 25% tip, or even a 20% tip. Calling me a cheap ass because I don't tip as much as you think is appropriate is ridiculous. They are being paid to do a job. Anything they get above and beyond their paycheck they should accept as a bonus and be grateful for it. As the customer I have no responsibility to pay the driver extra to do a job he is already being paid to do. If you believe otherwise, good for you. To each his own. I hope you enjoy the view from your pedestal. Big Grin

A $1 tip on a $20 order? A 5% tip? Even the cheapskates in all of the other Lounge tipping threads tip better than that. I would have refused the tip as well. Thanks but no thanks. You obviously need it more than the delivery guy.

LMAO 25% tip to a delivery guy? What planet are you from? Am I the only one who thinks that's completely ridiculous?
I don't think it's ridiculous. A $5 tip is about right over here.

I'm sorry.. but I must be the only one that feels in today's world we have gotten pretty greedy. Refuse money?? Really? Regardless if it is $1.. or $5.... tipping is not a requirement... and I for one have always been grateful for whatever a person could leave me. Now a waitress that is getting way less than min. wage.. thats different.. and yes.. I have worked as a waitress and a pizza delivery person..and I would never have been so rude as to turn down a tip... that person worked hard for their a money and they were passing it on to me for my work... manners .. a thing of the past I guess.

Sorry, but that's nuts. That's almost an hour's worth of work at minimum wage. For 15 mins worth of work he's already being paid to do?

I'm sorry but that seems nuts to me.

Trust me when I say this, without people tipping there would be a delivery charge on orders.

To each his own, I guess. Me personally, I don't mind paying for a service that keeps me from getting in my car and picking it up myself. Plus, when they see my address on their pizza run then obviously the better tippers are delivered first.

I avoid this entire quagmire by picking food up myself. Not that I have much choice... since I'm gluten free now we don't eat pizza anymore and the good Chinese place near us doesn't deliver. I usually just call in my order when I'm leaving school and then swing by the place on my way home and pick it up.

So much easier. Big Grin

P.S. - I'm not objecting to tipping. If you want to leave a big tip and can afford to do so, more power to you. I'm just objecting to people thinking it's OBLIGATORY to pay someone that much extra to do a job they are already getting paid to do. That's all.

I am not saying that anyone is obligated to tip as we do over here. I am just saying that $5 tip on a $20 order isn't out of the ordinary.

Places in my area (and I suppose nationally) do have delivery charges, and I always choose to pick up because after tip and charge it adds almost 50% to my order.

The one that gets me is the curbside pick-up at some of the chains, where for just bringing the order to the car the waitresses want a tip. Sorry, call me cheap, but bringing a bag 15 ft doesn't earn you 15%.

Perhaps he was being a real man and realized that he should stop coercing his customers into subsidizing his pathetically low pay and actually either talk to his superiors about it or getting a meaningful job?

Or am I putting too much faith in humanity?
