I thought they were also speculating that the pesticides were also causing the bee disappearce??
I know i've seen Sevin-10 ( the stronger one which i think most places stopped carrying ) will absolutely DESTROY bees and is a fine power/dust.
Sevin contains - Carbaryl - which is a killer to bees and causes alot of issues to bugs/humans alike

And to answer your question: Yes the bees just "hang" around the queen.
From what I heard, it's all those genetically modified trees and plants that killing the bees (they're not leaving, they're dying). Last year we talked to a forest ranger on our camping trip and she was pretty pissed about tree cutting company replenting the forest with those modifed "fast growing" trees and that the bears and forest animals are dying from eating their bark and stuff. And the trees are crap too -- they grow fast but have no density.
