If they were actually honey bees, you really could have acted better. I'm sure you have a local beekeepers club/society. For anyone who runs into this problem, I'm sure a local beekeeper would be very willing to come out and remove the hive for you. Might have even gotten some honey in return. Big Grin

And if they are European/Italian variety, which is often the case as hives will split/leave from beekeepers, they are very mild mannered. You will likely be bumped by bees if they feel you are threatening the hive long before you are stung.

The more you know.
I did call a beekeeper. Tried a few of them. None were interested. I know how valuable bees are. But when no one was interested in helping, you have to do what you have to do. My palace - not theirs. And yes, they were very mild mannered. I felt bad killing them, but they were so heavy you couldn't go into the front door or in the garage without them bumping into you.

The more you know. Wink

I actually run two bee hives and $70 is about the going rate for a box with a queen. I prefer to get them from my local apiary club since they drive them up from down south and I am able to pick them up in person. I find that there is less die-off this way than receiving them in the mail.

In AZ the bee keepers won't get them either. They said they are afraid they could be africanized.

"Half a bee, philosophically, must ipso facto half not be.
But half the bee has got to be, vis--vis its entity - d'you see?
But can a bee be said to be or not to be an entire bee
when half the bee is not a bee, due to some ancient injury?".
